1970 Mercedes Benz  280SL Roadster  4-speed Please  Read All

We at MotorCarTrader. com  are proud to offer another great sports car and  this very special and one of a kind  Mercedes 280SL Roadster.  A bit of history about the Mercedes 280SL  “Pagoda:”

With the presentation of the 230SL at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963. Daimler-Benz launched a new sports car to replace the two outgoing roadsters: the legendary 300SL and the popular 190SL. While stylistically similar. their respective design concepts were vastly different. so it proved to be quite a challenge to create a new common denominator. The new SL was a synthesis of the two previous models which set new standards in driving dynamics and safety. The new SL. known internally as series W113 was the first sports car ever with a rigid passenger safety cell along with front and rear crumple zones. The body design was characterized by its removable. concave shaped hardtop. which also gave it the nickname “Pagoda”

This great Mercedes as we understand had 4 meticulous owners throughout its life. The original owner we were told was an Italian movie studio and supposedly the car was used by a famous Italian actress while she was filming a movie. This was an original Italian delivery car as it has the original European headlamps. but also has the Italian side markers on the body. The car was then sold to Alabama and bought for the new owner's wife. It was then sold to a gentleman who lives in the state of Georgia. The next owner purchased the car from his brother in law who lived in South Carolina He owned the car for the past 15 years. We purchased the car not long ago from the most recent owner in South Carolina and have been enjoying the car since.  The car has been meticulously maintained since new. This  is truly a rare find to be as well kept both cosmetically (original in some areas) and also top mechanical condition as well. This beautiful Pagoda still wears almost all of its original Red (DB568) Paint.  This is the original color combination with matching numbers as per Mercedes Benz Data Card. The original paint does show patina as it is 43 years old with some fading and some cracking. The interior is the original color of Black (DB131) MB-Tex Interior was completely redone by the Mercedes Benz specialists at Buds Benz. They also did a new Canvas soft top for the car as well.  This is the original color combination and has  Mercedes Benz Data Card to confirm numbers and color combination.

This Mercedes 280SL presented here is a rare 4 speed car.   It runs. stops and drives perfect.  It is truly one of the best Mercedes 280SLs to drive you will find anywhere.   Just recently. the bushings were all replaced in the shifter. so the car is silky smooth to shift. All bushings in the suspension were replaced. A new cap. rotor. plugs and ignition wires were replaced. The car has excellent oil pressure and the compression on the engine is 180psi to 200psi across all 6 cylinders. The temperature stays cool on very hot days. I have driven this special Mercedes over 1. 00 miles in the past  months and have enjoyed every mile!  The brakes stop immediately and straight with no pulling in either direction.   There are several Mercedes 280SLs which wander all over the road or feel loose.   In addition. they may feel mushy or sloppy to drive.   This is certainly not one of them as it is tight at any speed and is sure footed around any turn as it handles exceptional. The car is an absolute joy to drive anywhere.   The original Becker radio was replaced at some point and a newer CD player was installed. We do have the original  Becker Europa radio which goes to the car.

To elaborate on the condition of this car. as the way would evaluate the car.

Body/Paint: The body on this car is very straight and a rare original. As said above. most of the paint of this car is original. It is probably one of the nicest original 280SL bodies to be found. The car does not have new paint and does not shine like new paint as it is over 43 years old. It shows original patina in the form of  cracking and fading in some areas.   It looks like at some point in time there was some work or blend work on rear passenger side corner. but a majority of the paint looks original.  The wheel wells and wheel lips are not undercoated like most of them are and that also shows its original red paint. The original body notches are near the headlamps and are in the pictures below. You can actually see what this car is. where on most restored cars you may not completely know what is underneath. In addition some are disguised by nice paint and all "blinged up" to look good for resale.  The next owner may choose paint it in the future or just drive it the way it is for a while.

Chrome:  The overall chrome is in excellent original condition. It is not peeling and still shines nicely. It shows some wear from being older. but still is in very nice original condition.

Interior/Top/Inside of trunk:  The interior was redone by the Mercedes Specialists at Buds  Benz in the original Black (DB131) MB-Tex. It is in excellent condition. The radio as mentioned above is not original. but we do have the original Becker radio which goes with the car. The top was replaced by Bud's as well. The exterior of the hardtop shows patina and cracking as it is original. The headliner of the top and wood are in excellent condition and very clean. The wood on the dash is all original and not warped or split. All gauges and switches work as they should.

Engine Compartment:  Under the hood is original shiny paint. The hood has the body number stamped on upper portion.   The engine bay has been cleaned. but not overly detailed as it is original.   The original insulation is still on the firewall and in great condition.

Underside: The underside of this 280SL is all solid. It has the original floors and there is no rust underneath this car. We did not overly detail the underneath. as to show its original condition with some dirt and discoloration but solid. Please do not confuse the discoloration or dirt with rust. Unlike other Mercedes 280SLs. it does not have extensive undercoating  to completely cover the underneath of the car. so you cannot tell the actual condition of the underside.   The undercoating looks mostly original and it is easily visible to see how solid the underneath of this car is. It might be a little dirty. but still as solid a Mercedes 280SL as you will find.

Overall: This is a very special Mercedes 280SL and truly one of our favorites we have ever offered for sale.   It is not a show car but more of an original type of car with original paint. which can be driven anywhere and the new owner will enjoy every single mile. This great Pagoda is ready to be enjoyed. Mercedes 280SLs have proven to be great investments and have appreciated nicely over the past few years. There are several offered for sale and good ones are hard to find. These cars are not going down in value and will continue to appreciate as other Mercedes Roadster prices continue to skyrocket. These were one of the most enjoyable to drive with the 4 speed out of all them.   This is truly a special find and is sure to please the next owner!
