If you know what you are viewing. you know this is a very rare beast. In the USA during the 80s and 90s the Police/State Troopers were looking for something to catch the guys in the fast cars. Wall Street greed was in and fast cars were only a bankers bonus away. The wide boys in their porsches. Corvettes and BMWs would sometimes bait the cops with a cheeky burnout or fast drive by and the chase was on. Early in the 80s the Police happened upon the LX 5. 0 liter Mustang Notchback (The notchback was a much rarer beast than the GT and Hatchback models  and this body style was light. very light. This was because it had a boot rather than a great big hatchback weighing it down) They wanted a fast car which had a big stonking V8 and could be bought with a Manual transmission (something the Americans didn't really take to in their sports cars) This was the car they wanted. A car that as the Police posters put it "A Ford that Catches Porsches for a living" The chase was on! In the States the speed police usually sit in a position that faces traffic. The radar gun mounted in the car faces oncoming traffic and an alarm sounds when a speeder exceeds the limit. The police car then needs to get on the road. turn around and then catch up to the speed demon that is now racing in the other direction from where the Police/State Troopers vehicle was facing. The 5 speed. 5. 0L Mustang was the vehicle for such a quick turnaround and Chase scenarios.
A bit about me and why I bought such a car. I have wanted a Fox 5. 0 Mustang since I first saw one in the states as a young lad. I am from New Jersey USA by the way.  The sleek lines and light weight of the Fox Mustang combined with the 5. 0L V8 always got my juices flowing. When I was about 17 and all the guys that had rich parents got the "5. 0" when they got their drivers license.  I had to make due with a little run around handed down by my mom. I was so envious of the big twin stainless steel tailpipes and the throaty roar of the V8s when the cool kids did burnouts in the parking lot or sped away after school.
I have. in the ensuing years.  thought about getting one and even watched ebay for them in the states. These notchbacks (cars in the USA with a boot rather than a hatch) are quite rare. most buyers of Mustangs in the 1990s went for the hatchback. Ford Dealers mostly stocked hatchbacks and the GT models. When I would find a nice condition one for sale I would dream about sitting in the bucket seat and giving it some throttle and dream about being a young lad again.
Most of these cars were bought up by drag racers as they were the perfect platform for quarter mile drags. In the early days in New Jersey USA a few of the gearhead guys set up the pro-5. 0 drag racing program specifically for the 5. 0 mustang. These races were eventually run throughout the USA with only the hottest and fastest 5. 0L mustangs running the quarter mile. Guys would modify the hell out of their cars. Supercharger. Turbochargers. Bigger intakes. drag radials. bigger and stronger axles and differentials. Roll cages. you name it and they did it. That is why the few of these notchback mustangs you see are mostly ragged out and modified so far from stock you don't know what the car was like in its stock form.  As you might expect. the use of many of the SSP cars after their police duty for drag racing did little for the longevity of the model. Not many have survived.
This particular car called out to me about a year ago. I saw it for sale and I had to buy it. It is not only a Ford Mustang. 5. 0 liter Notch with a five speed. it is also an SSP. Special Service Package State Troopers Patrol car. It was used in the State of Missouri as a Chase car for speeders as well as a drug interdiction car to chase drug importers hauling drugs across state lines. It has been lovingly restored back to original "in service" condition with its roof mounted light bar (light bar installation for this particular State was very special as this state trooper station realized how hard it would be to resell the cars back to the public after there state trooper duty with a hole in the roof for the roof light bar wiring that most others drilled so they ran the wire on the outside of the roof along the window frame so the whole assembly can be removed with no holes left)  Wig wag headlights (where the headlight flash from side to side) Functioning Siren. PA. Police radio. Take Down light. Alley lights. A pillar mounted spot light. Front and Rear facing Radar. 3 Boot Mounted Antennas. Full size Spare. 2 sets of complete magnetic police insignia (removable for when you don't want to attract everyones attention on the road) Handcuffs. Single Key locking doors. ignition and boot. Police grade interior light. Factory reinforced floor pan. Factory reinforced driver seat.  Factory reinforced floor pan. remote boot release and I am sure I am forgetting something.
Car also comes with the "Platemaster" registration plate that it ran with in the force. A large book of in-service photos. copies of original order sheets. the tender put out when the force was looking for their new 1990 police cars. the original mechanics service card from the actual state troopers mechanic file. recording the service work done to the car by the force.
The lights. siren and PA all are functional. It looks amazing with the take down lights on the roof glowing and the flashing lights spinning around. The siren is deafening! it gets EVERYONES attention. The black search light is fantastic. bright as can be and fully controlled by the joystick near the drivers left hand. The police radio lights up but as it is USA spec it does not pick up stations. I have the correct plug adapter for the radar unit and I am told it works perfectly.
Why am I selling? Thats a great question. I bought the car in Georgia. I imported the car from the states. had the changes made to the cars lights that allowed it to pass a UK Mot. Paid the import taxes and duties. Got all the niggles sorted that are present when you buy a used car. The shifter was changed out for a new "Steeda" 5. 0 shifter. the idle air controller was replaced with a ford Motorcraft unit. an optima battery was sourced and installed and a few other little things were sorted to make this a pleasurable car to drive.
THEN the wife decided she wants a convertible MG. WHY oh WHY did I keep taking her to car shows?? We have just built a new two car garage and the other side is taken up by my 65 Mustang Fastback. Now she is demanding a convertible for next summer. I don't want to sell either car but need to make a choice. This car was a lifes dream but a wife can turn that dream into a nightmare :-)
This car looks great. Has a very high quality correct original color paint job in its done by a Ford Dealership in the states. Goodyear (correct brand. type and spec speed rated tyres for this car) tyres in excellent shape. non Curbed correct 10 hole alloy wheels. Power Steering and Brakes. Power windows and door locks. AM-FM correct factory radio. Engine is a correct 5. 0L/302 cubic inch Ford remanufactured unit installed by a ford dealer. Correct factory Twin Stainless steel tailpipes exiting under the rear bumper. Upholstery is in great condition. you would never think it was installed in 1990 at the factory! Car sits right and looks amazing. Many of the police mustangs where painted either white or black and white. these are not the most attractive of colors for a member of the public to own and drive. This car is very unique as it was blue from the factory. One of only four bought by the Missouri State patrol in 1990 in this color and the ONLY one remaining as the other three were lost in police chases.
Car would be great for a side business for dropping off the Groom at a wedding or a few guys to a stag night. The lights and siren would be the star of the show. Imagine pulling up to the church in a Fully dressed State Troopers car. The deals are vinyl magnetic so are easily removable and I have two complete sets. I have the book of all the history of the car as well as order sheets and registration plates. I wish this car could talk. imagine the history this thing has. Chasing speeders and drug dealers.
I got pulled over in Orlando Florida by one of these 5. 0 chase cars and I think I was actually happy to get a look at one of these babies up close.
Car will be sold with a new mot and full years tax. V5 in hand and in my name. Plus a large folder of import documentation. The paperwork includes several in service photos of this exact car back in the day. The original tender put out my the state troopers for purchasing these cars. The specific details of what they were after were all listed. The dealerships offer for these cars and the prices and vin numbers of all the cars that were purchased for 1990. Also the in service records for this car.
EDIT: Car flew through its MOT two weeks ago. Gent at the MOT station said it was as new underneath. I took quite a few photos. email me if you want them. It really is mint underneath. As good as my 2013 Ford daily driver. its that nice! NO bondo. no welding. no patches. no repairs. no rust proofing spray. just clean factory steel.
