1968 Guards Red Porsche 912 Coupe for sale
Current customer rating: (326 votes ) based onI purchased this numbers-matching '68 912 via eBay in August of 2004. In the nearly 10 years since. the car has been treated like a spoiled brat – kept in a garage. and receiving a wide variety of original and NOS parts to replace worn or non-factory pieces that had found their way onboard over the nearly 40+ years. Also included was a comprehensive top-to-bottom interior restoration in 2007 after some minor rust was discovered on the floorpans and rear seat tub.
But yet. it is still not totally stock. Some non-original components I decided to go with include German square-weave carpet. a style used on the pre '68 models. and one that I found both more attractive visually. and much more durable than the cheap-looking “felt-like” perlon carpeting used on later models. I also replaced the original factory seats with a sportier. leather Monte Carlo model from GTS Classics. which were then topped-off with '69-vintage seatbelts. Lastly. the Momo steering wheel is a non-stock replacement. but – in keeping with the seats – reflects a sporty ambiance as well.
Overall. the car runs great. and has only been driven in dry weather since my ownership. I did pick up some receipts from the PO's – including one dated from 1999 which was for the exterior re-paint in Guards Red. If I were to continue to keep the car in my garage. another paint job would probably be added to my to-do list. While it looks terrific at 5 feet away. a few light scratches and a slight fissure on the passenger-side rear quarter panel will keep the car from absolute perfection.
The numbers-matching engine was rebuilt approximately fifty-thousand miles ago. using Mahle large-bore pistons; bringing the engine up to 1720cc. The Weber carbs have been rebuilt. and the valves have recently been adjusted. A PO also had the suspension upgraded with Weltmeister 19mm swaybars and Koni high performance shocks. It also features a strut tower brace and turbo tie-rod ends which. combined. greatly enhance performance during high-speed cornering.
In prepping the Porsche for sale. after tallying up the invoices. I noticed that the parts that I alone had purchased exceeded a whopping $16. 00. That. plus the maintenance and restoration services that have been performed during my watch. bring the total expenditures to over $28000. and that doesn't even include my original purchase price for the car! If that's not love. I don't know what is.
All I can say is – Somebody's going to get a Great Deal!!!
In fact. this car was featured in the February 6. 2006 edition of AutoWeek magazine.
