Boss 302 engine. Shelby dual four barrel. and six speed transmission
Why a Boss 302 and Shelby? Carroll Shelby built at least one Boss 302 prototype. This is my take on what a Shelby Boss 302 would be like. Just 2. 00 miles since completion. Handling and traction are greatly improved.
Engine: The engine is an original 1970 Boss 302. I've owned this engine since 1972. It is a DOZE block with 4. 000 bore (not over-bored). four bolt mains. and screw-in freeze plugs. The pad where the serial number goes is blank. It has been balanced and blueprinted. It has the stock Boss 302 solid lifter cam. stock Boss 302 steel crank. stainless steel valves. Crane springs. titanium retainers. Crane roller rockers. and stock Boss 302 heads. It also has an original Shelby dual four barrel manifold with two 450 cfm Holley carburetors. To fit the new chassis. I added a late model dual sump oil pan and modified a set of Sanderson 351C headers. which I had ceramic coated. The remainder of the exhaust is stainless steel MagnaFlow. The engine is dressed with a serpentine belt system and Shelby valve covers and air cleaner.
Transmission: Tremec T-56 six speed transmission with hydraulic clutch and reverse lockout activation on T-handle shifter.
Rear End: Ford 9” with 4:11 gears and limited slip differential mounted on a Rod and Custom Motorsports four bar rear suspension with Aldan coil-over shocks and rear sway bar. The gears make a slight hum above 50 mph. In sixth gear the engine turns 2300 rpm at 70 mph.
Front End: The front suspension is a Power Suspension Module from Fatman Fabrications. It is an integrated cross-braced tubular structure that replaces the shock towers. front frame rails. and suspension. It incorporates coil-over McPherson Struts. polished stainless steel lower control arms. power rack and pinion steering. Wilwood 12” disc brakes. and removable inner fender panels. I had to modify it to get it to fit the 1970 Mustang body. This allowed me to mount the aluminum Griffin radiator at an angle parallel to the late model police interceptor fan and clutch.
Body: Starting with an “F” code 1970 Sport Roof. outwardly the body appears stock. The only modification is where I removed the backup lights from the rear valence. Backup light comes from the LEDs on the license plate frame. The body has no rust. The front half of the passenger floor pan. the driver's floor pan and seat riser have been replaced. The floors have been coated with POR15. To fit the T-56 transmission in the floor tunnel. I moved both the engine and transmission down about an inch and back about 2 inches. This required fabricating both the motor mounts and the transmission mount. and setting the firewall back about an inch. This provided needed hood clearance and put the Hurst shift handle in the stock location. The fender lips are rolled front and rear. The paint is 05 Mustang Chrome Yellow base coat-clear coat in better than average condition for a driven car.
Electrical: The car is completely rewired with a Painless wiring kit for 69-70 Mustangs. All wires are labeled and any circuits not used are neatly tied up behind the dash. All under hood wiring is routed through the tube chassis to clean up the engine compartment. This is a radio delete car. but can be added. The wiper switch has been replaced with an intermittent variable speed unit. The light switch and ignition switch are new. The heater box is completely rebuilt and has a new blower motor and control cables. The distributor is equipped with a Pertronix Ignitor II ignition system. The plug wires are Jacobs 8mm with ceramic boots.
Wheels and Tires: Wheels are 17x8 Cragar SS Thrusts. Tires are Kumho ASX P245/45R17 front and P255/50R17 rear.
Interior: The seats are covered in yellow and black leather with running horse logo stitched in the seat backs. The dash has a new pad. I added four 3-point retractable seat belts for safety. Door panels are deluxe with the wood grain blacked out. The dash panels are black. The leather steering wheel is by LeCarra with a Shelby emblem. Gauges are Auto Meter Ultra-Lite II with silver faces in day light and through-the-dial lighting and dark faces at night. The headliner and carpets are in good condition.
Trunk: In the trunk I fabricated a flat metal floor that covers the gas tank. The jack and lug wrench are stored in trap-door compartments beneath the relocated late model mini spare. The carpeted trunk houses the rear mounted battery.
