For the 1970 model year. Chevrolet introduced their ultimate iteration of the “smallblock” V8. Known as the LT-1. this new high-performance engine was available in the Corvette. Camaro Z/28 (replacing the high-revving 302) as well as in the Nova - though only as a COPO special order. The new high-compression. 350 cubic inch unit was thoroughly reworked with an 11. 0:1 compression ratio. solid lifters. high performance camshaft. a big Holley 780 CFM carburetor. and new intake and exhaust manifolds. The engine produced a very heady 370 horsepower in the Corvette. making it the ideal choice for drivers who wanted to get the most out of their Corvette's handling. The LT-1 was so good that it formed the basis for the ultra-rare and desirable 1970 ZR1 road-race package. Much lighter than the big block 454 and nearly as powerful. the LT-1 is considered one of the greatest iterations of the 350 cubic inch small-block V8. Chevrolet offered the LT-1 option from 1970-1972. though with each subsequent model year getting a drop in compression and horsepower. thereby making the 1970 models the most desirable of the breed.
By 1970 a few minor refinements were made to the C3's Mako Shark-inspired styling. Most notable were the egg-crate side grilles that mirrored that of the front grille. The fenders were flared slightly to prevent rock chips and the seats reworked for greater comfort. The tweaked looks make for one of the most cohesive and attractive of all the C3 ‘Vettes. A labor strike that had begun in 1969 made for a relatively low production of 17. 16 1970 Corvettes. Of that total. 6. 48 were convertibles and it is believed that only 400 of those were fitted with the LT-1 option.
RB Collection is very pleased to present this outstanding 1970 Corvette LT-1 Convertible. This fine Corvette comes to us via its long-term owner; a highly respected automotive historian. The owner applied his historical knowledge and skills in creating an extensive file that not only documents the history of this car. but also verifies it as a genuine. matching-numbers LT-1. Shortly after his acquisition of the car 25 years ago. he commissioned a sympathetic and careful restoration. The high quality restoration presents very well in the original shade of Monza Red over a black interior.   Extensive records document the restoration and the use of correct original parts wherever possible. The original engine was rebuilt fewer than 4. 00 miles ago. using correct components throughout. It retains correct date-coded intake. exhaust manifolds. transistorized ignition. smog pump. Delco-Remy starter motor. as well as the vin-matching block and four-speed transmission.
The Monza Red paint presents in very good condition with a deep gloss and good quality panel fit. The fact that it was restored nearly 25 years ago and still shows so well is a testament to the quality of the work and the care it has received since. Chrome and body fittings are excellent with no dings or blemishes on the chrome bumpers. It rides on correct factory rally wheels and sports a dealer-installed luggage rack.
The standard black interior is in correct specification to the trim tag and presents very well with good quality upholstery on the seats and door panels. as well as very good black carpeting. The center console features all correct original auxiliary instruments and an original AM/FM radio. A white pinpoint vinyl top is in good condition. showing a few wrinkles but otherwise sound and free of rips. tears or damage.
Beneath the hood rests the legendary LT-1 which presents in excellent order. It is correctly detailed without appearing fussy or artificial. The condition encourages driving and regular use. the best way to properly enjoy this amazing small block. This is an honest and genuine car that is extremely well-presented and exhaustively documented. It is a proper. verified LT-1 that can and should be enjoyed on the road. yet presents well enough for casual show.
