1971 Citroen ID20 Saloon - Black Beauty completely rebuilt/rejuvenated A to Z

My good friend Danijel  who lives in Zadar. Croatia is a quality control specialist with a european auto parts company. and his hobby is restoring Citroen D models.  Typically he rehabilitates and rebuilds one  of these cars a year. completely disassembling them. repairing any frame rust correctly and then  totally rebuilding them in all aspects.  Blacky II is a 1971 ID20 with a five speed manual transmission.  

This beautiful Parisian Goddess - the car that has been called “The Car of the Century” and which was voted the most beautiful car of all time by an international jury of automobile designers and journalists has undergone a 1000 hour plus total restoration by Danijel  The car is now  completely 100% rust free. was treated with high quality rust prevention materials and  has had every mechanical system replaced. rebuilt or repaired with original NOS parts.

First the car was completely. nut and bolt disassembled. Then the entire frame was sandblasted and all old undercoating and corrosion was stripped away by hand. Where required. nbsp; new metal parts were sourced or new material was cut to fit. nbsp; welded in place. ground smooth and then the entire frame was cleaned. etched. and protected with Venezziani epoxy bodyguard. then primed again and finally  given two coats of black epoxy paint.   The frame should be good for another 40 years on the road.   

The body panels and roof were all removed. stripped. repaired as requred. primed. sanded and given two coats of Glasurit epoxy paint.   There is no bondo or filler in this car.   Danijel has hundreds of pictures of the process to document the total body and mechanical rebuild.  All new seals and rubber parts were installed from roof to frame.

All alignment and body gaps are  to factory standard. as new. The car is laser straight.   Day or night. wet or dry. Blacky  II is  a sleek thing of beauty.   By day she draws attention wherever she goes. At night. with her tracking euro headlights that swing with the steering and adjust automatically for loading. it is like riding on a swift. silent arrow on any road.   Ridewise. there is simply nothing lto compare with a DS.

This car is mechanically restored in all areas - engine. transmission. brakes. steering. cooling system. hydraulics. electrical. etc.   Over $12. 00 was spent in hard costs alone for parts to OEM standard.   Blacky is  completely roadworthy and  qualifies for a european “Oldtimer” historical car certificate.  

The engine was diassembled. nd rebuilt.   These engines were used for more than 30 years in various Citroen vehicles and are very robust  - 250. 00 miles before overhaul is not unusual.   The hemispherical head was macnined and a new head gasket assures perfect compression.   The engine and all parts under the hood have been refinished appropriately.

Inside. nbsp; the car was completely stripped. any rust removed. nbsp; sanded and refinished with silent coat.   (The car is now about 40% more quiet inside than the original DS!  The dashboard was removed and rfinished. the car and all connections were rewired. and sound deadening material was used on the  firewall area and floors. With her new red Italian Imola leather seats and panels and  all new mats and carpets.  this car once again has the luxurious feel that these French flagships were famous for.   Throughout the rebuild/restoration great attention was paid to oft-overlooked details like the control pedals. which were removed. sandblasted and repainted.   All screws and fasteners that were not replaced were cleaned and replated.

Blacky II has now had several hundred miles on the road with absoltely no issue and is ready to leave her home in sunny Zadar and make some lucky buyer as proud and happy as Danijel is in restoring these beauties.
