This is a superb 1973 Citroen DS Super 5 finished in the perfect colours of Black on Black. It has a new MOT is an older restoration with only minor cosmetic blemishes and is ready for its next owner. Citroen`s iconic D Series cars have enjoyed countless accolades since the inaugural DS19 model first saw the light of day at the Paris Salon in 1955. Classic & Sports Car magazine subsequently named the DS the most beautiful car of all time following a poll of twenty of the world`s most influential car designers. including Giugiaro. Bracq. Callum and Fioravanti. It also came third in the Car of the Century competition of 1999. The futuristic design of its Flaminio Bertoni-penned body was a stunning sight in the austere world of the `50s. and remains so to this day. The self-levelling hydropneumatic suspension was also way ahead of its time. delivering a `magic carpet` ride that many manufacturers would be grateful for even now. It also endowed the car with sufficiently good handling and roadholding to win the Monte Carlo Rally in both 1959 and 1966. despite its relative lack of performance. The newcomer was powered by an updated 1911cc version of the OHV four-cylinder unit previously found in the Traction Avant. This grew over the twenty years of production to an eventual 2347cc. Throughout. the gearbox was mounted ahead of the engine and the differential sandwiched between the two. Braking was by inboard-mounted discs at the front and drums at the rear. Steering was by rack and pinion. Though the DS sold well from the outset. it was nevertheless beyond the pocket of many potential buyers and Citroen addressed this in 1956 with the launch of the more modestly priced ID19. It had the same basic body and mechanical architecture of the DS19 but initially lacked its technically complex. hydraulically-operated clutch and gearchange and its powered steering and braking systems. The ID range was subsequently developed in parallel to the DS and by 1972 was offered in three versions - the 1985cc D Special and D Super and the 115bhp 2175cc D Super 5. By then. ID specifications had greatly improved and the latter was equipped with powered steering and braking and a five-speed manual gearbox. Some 1. 5 million D Series Citroens were produced altogether and the models immortalised in numerous films. in particular. The Goddess of 1967 (which starred a 1967 DS) and The Day of the Jackal. The presentable left-hand drive D Super 5 on offer here was manufactured in 1973 and features Black coachwork and a Black leather interior. The subject of an older restoration it is now in a very nice condition. It runs and drives very well indeed. is UK registered and is probably the coolest car on the road today!
