2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited w/ Selec Trac 4WD & A Factory Installed TUPY 0331 Cylinder Head!

Poppy Red with Agate (gray) leather Interior with only 96k miles. kept in original condition. If you've been shopping for clean. unmodified XJ's. especially Limiteds. you know it's getting much harder to find nice ones that are completely stock and well taken care of. If you really know what you're looking for. then you know that 99-01 XJ's were equipped with 2 versions of the 0331 head: the one prone to cracking and the stronger. TUPY head. This Cherokee has that TUPY head factory installed.

I've uploaded a bunch of photos. oil analysis. and the service records spreadsheet to a public. Google Drive Folder that you can access by clicking HERE.

I purchased this Cherokee from the second owner. who owned it for less than a year. He bought it to drive through the winter of 2015 and ran out of garage space (the Triumph was taking up too much room) in the spring. He had purchased it from the original owner who was a long-time mechanic at a Jeep dealership who bought it off the lot. Both of these previous owners (as well as myself) were meticulous record keepers and kept track of everything ever done to the Jeep from fluid changes to larger repairs and all are detailed in an Excel file. After it's last oil change (December). I had Blackstone Labs run a used oil analysis and the report (see link) came back with near perfect numbers. Since purchasing in 2015. I've done a fair bit of updating and preventative maintenance along with routine maintenance. Read on for the break down.

Mechanical

The Jeep needs nothing. Never an OBDII code. no rough idling or pinging or noisy lifters. Since I've owned it. it's been Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Synthetic with Mobil 1 and Fram Ultra Guard filters the entire time. 4. 00-5. 00 mile oil change intervals. Currently running Pennzoil High Mileage 5W-30 for the winter. I've kept track of fuel economy as well and it averages 17MPG in the "city" / foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains into town and 20MPG on cruise control up and down I-95. I've never had a cooling / overheating issue. There are no leaks anywhere. You'll see the rear differential cover is discolored. That's residual gear oil that leaked out when I replaced the rear diff plug.

Here's a short list of updates and maintenance:

AC Compressor. receiver. and expansion valve (78. 00)Swaybar end links and bushings (78. 00)BG Systems Transmission Flush (78. 00)New Plugs (NGK) and OEM Ignition coil rail (spare came with the XJ) (80. 00)Tires - General AltiMax RT43's (82. 00)Bilstein Shocks all around (82. 00)New Brake Lines and Rear Drum Brakes (83. 00)Coil Springs (96. 00)And plenty of smaller items that can be seen in the service log. The AW4 4-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and displays no issues. The kickdown cable has been properly adjusted. one of the smallest yet best routine maintenance jobs you can do to keep the AW-4 shifting properly.  This Jeep has the NP-242 Selec-Trac transfer case that has 2WD High. 4WD Part Time. 4WD Full Time High and 4WD Full Time Low options.  The Selec-Trac engages/disengages on the fly properly without grinding/popping/or needing to force it into gear. I've never gotten stuck in the snow and there have been a few times when I thought for sure I would. That said. 99% of the miles I have put on the Jeep have been on paved roads. I've lived the past six months on a dirt road. but have never taken it off-roading or mudding.

Interior:

The interior is in great condition. There is one small tear on the outside of the driver's seat bottom cushion (shown in pictures). This happens on all leather Cherokees at some point. It's caused by simply getting in and out of the car. The headliner has begun to sag above the driver's seat and has one small tear over the cargo area that is about the size of pencil eraser. it's hardly noticeable. The vehicle was never smoked in. The back seat may have been sat in 5 times. Maybe. The factory radio/cd player will be reinstalled before the buyer takes ownership. For what it's worth. the stock speakers absolutely sing with an upgraded head unit. Carpets. upholstery. center console. glove box. etc. are all in excellent condition. A/C blows ice cold.

Body:

The body on this Cherokee is in really great shape overall.   The Poppy Red paint looks great. has a very nice shine. and gets waxed annually.  There are a few really minor scuff marks on the front and rear bumpers from normal wear.  There is a small (yet noticeable from the right angle) pushed-in dent just under the rear-most. passenger side window. I assume someone opened their truck door into it. The paint is not scratched or chipped. It can be pulled out if desired. it just never bothered me all that much.  There is almost no rust visible on the outside of the body. From the outside. the Jeep really looks great and draws a lot of positive comments. On two separate occasions. folks have left "Contact me if you'd like to sell this Jeep" notes on the windshield.   The chrome grill. body colored moldings and 16" alloy wheels really make this Limited stand out from the much more common Cherokee Sports.

The bottoms of the doors and rocker panels are starting to get the trademark Cherokee rust. The original owner cleaned up the rocker panels and painted them. They appear to have been repaired correctly and are solid.   From the outside there is a small bit of surface rust starting to show through the paint toward the back of the driver's side rocker.   If you open the rear doors. you can also see there are surface rust spots on each side in the typical spots (along the seams where the rocker panel is welded to the inner quarter panel and at the bottom of the B-pillar and by the plastic vent). These spots are just surface rust and can easily be cleaned up. treated and painted.   I've tried to capture all of this as best as possible in the attached pictures. The lighter red spots along the inside of the rocker panels in the photos are where some of the touch up paint the previous owner sprayed is starting to peel off.

The bottoms of the doors will need attention.   The previous owner had put some rust preventer on the inside bottoms of all four doors and covered them with undercoating.   The passenger side front door and both rear doors appear worse in the pictures than they are.   They have not rusted through the inner lip of the door skin that folds over.   The inner. lower sections of those three doors can easily be cleaned up with a wire wheel. treated with rust preventer/stabilizer and painted.

The driver's side door will need more attention. It was not caught in time so the inner lip of the door skin and lower inner section of the door have rusted through in spots.   This door could probably be saved with a lower door skin repair panel (several companies make them that go from the door moulding down) and welding some new metal on the inner lower section of the door.   The easier/better alternative may be to purchase a rust free southern/western door. which appear to be readily available for a reasonable price. then repaint it and install it.  That said. the rust has not been creeping in any noticeable way since I've owned it. It gets sprayed down regularly in the winter.

The undercarriage is very solid. but does show surface rust in spots. which is typical for a vehicle of this age that was driven in the northeast. One of the projects I had planned to do was to clean up any of the rust spots on the undercarriage then paint the underside with POR-15 to stop any future rusting. Once I decided to sell the Jeep. I decided to hold off on doing that. I want the seller to be able to see how things really look on the underside and see that it is solid. I didn't want to put fresh coat of paint on it to make it look like I was trying to hide anything. The windshield picked up a very small rock chip (smaller than a dime) on the passenger's side a few years ago that was repaired by an auto glass installer. so it won't spread.

Extras:
Included in the sale are a bunch of new and slightly used OEM parts!  The parts include various switches. window regulators. interior pieces. x2 16" alloy wheels that match the current ones on the Jeep. headlights. and more.   The original owner picked up most of these parts whenever the dealership he worked for was reducing their Cherokee parts inventory.   I have a detailed spreadsheet listing all of the 40+ items that I'm happy to email to anyone interested.
