The Car's Story

Should you wish to skip the story and nostalgia then just scroll down to the key facts below. if not. do please read on.

The car was first registered in March 1977. my Dad becoming the car's second owner. The first owner was a semi-acquaintance of the family; we bought it from him in September 1978. I was still at school and I remember thinking at the time how dead posh it was for us to have an almost new car; for years before that we either had an old banger or didn’t have a car at all. just hiring one for when we went on holiday.

I was talking to my now 87-year-old Dad a short while ago about the car and he reminded me that when we got it we were told that it had been marked down as one to be 'watched' on the line. meaning. so we guessed. that it got a bit of extra care and scrutiny on quality. which back in the day was a long way from today's standards. We assumed that this was offered for a special purchase or purchaser. I am not sure of the exact reason why this was attributed to this car. it may well have been because the purchaser’s wife had some degree of disability… anyway it doesn’t matter too much now but I remember we felt quite warmed that it had this 'special' take on its assembly even if it really amounted to nowt.

It had about 7. 00 on the clock when we got it; this has now moved on to just over 30. 00. so not much really!! I remember the low mileage used to be a regular source of amusement every year when it was serviced and MOT’d. My Dad didn't like to drive that much; in later years it was only really shopping and over to my house some 8 miles away. I probably did more mileage in it than he did. I remember back in the mid -90's I borrowed it for a few months after my car was stolen. gave it a little extra exercise. and even took it to over 50mph on the odd occasion!!

It has been garaged ever since he has had it (so 35 years) and. although he was never the type to keep cleaning and polishing it every weekend. he would never leave it out over night or in the rain and got it serviced every year. In fact. if the car needed vitamin D to survive then it would surely be deficient as it hasn’t had much sunshine either. spending most of its time in the garage.

Towards the later years of driving it my Dad and Mum used to be somewhat surprised by the interest it would often generate from others when they were out. Smiles. questions and unsolicited offers to buy it from complete strangers. They were somewhat bemused by it all really. although my Mum in particular used to enjoy the interest it brought from others.

The car was last driven by my Dad in 2008 and has remained laid up in the garage ever since then. That is until last month when we got her out. put in a new set of points and away she went. fantastic!

On the journey to the MOT garage I stopped at a set of traffic lights next to a school. Up stepped a young lad who called in through the window… “I like your car mister”.   He probably wasn’t that much younger than I was when we got the car. "Ah bless" I thought… bet he hasn’t seen many. if any at all. like this before.

Extreme personal nostalgia alert! Further en route to the MOT garage. I passed the site of an Office Machinery factory where in the late 70s I had a cleaning job after school. My Dad used to pick me up from there and bring me back home in this car. The factory is not there anymore but the car is… and still looking very much the same (unlike me).

When the mechanic at the garage saw the car to take the test he broke into a smile from ear to ear. “I would rather my Dad gave me one of these. in this condition. than a rolex watch. #8221; he said.  "Oh you like her then". I thought. On the way back home a gentlemen walking towards me stopped. stood still by the roadside. smiled and gave me the thumps–up as I drove by.  How nice I thought. it just made we want to keep on driving!

Ok. so enough nostalgia. here's what you've been waiting for. a summary of the car’s details.

Key Facts

• The car is in original condition owned by the same owner for 35 years.

• It has been very well looked after and stored in a garage for all of those years.

• The car has covered a genuine 30. 85 miles. 23. 00 of those have been spread over the last 35 years (with only 3. 00 in the last 10 years).

• It has not been molested or adapted in anyway: No go-faster stripes. cut-outs for speakers. flared wheel arches. etc. etc. The only change being a replacement knob for one of the window winders!

• The body shell is very solid with all the original panels. No welding has ever been done or required as you would expect from the amount of time she has spent indoors.

• 11 months' MOT without any advisories.

• No tax.

• Lots of previous MOTs and tax discs if required.

• There are a few very minor superficial rust spots and the odd minor scratch and scrap here and there which is inevitable with a car of this age. I have tried to show these with the photos.

There is a scrape on the front near side wheel arch which my Dad touched up with red oxide paint. Nothing of any real significance.  I feel the need to stress this in order to manage any expectations of complete perfection. Having said that I now feel free to honestly say that the paintwork is really in pretty damned good condition. What you see in the photos really does not lie.   Likewise with the interior and seats. again the photos tell the story. (I have left the seat covers on the rear seats but underneath they are just as good as the front seats).

It's the little things that make this car extra special like the little ping noises the doors make when closing. the fact that it has still got its original wiper blades and the smell of the interior.

As you can probably tell it will be a wrench for me to sell this car. but this is what we need to do. It is my hope that she goes to an enthusiast who will treasure and preserve her maybe taking her to shows and concours. However this is a sale and as such she will follow the money so given her prime condition and the fact that she is a much sought after 2-door she may well end up with the rally/racing boys.

We will have to wait and see but good luck to you all and thanks for looking.
