1984 Honda CRX for sale
Current customer rating: (384 votes ) based onThis car is one of a kind. especially in New England. You won't see another one in this condition. 1984 was the first year of the CRX. and the only year that the 1. 3 liter engine was available. Many people may look down on the 1. 3 liter engine. It only has 65HP. but this is THE CRX with the best fuel economy out of all CRXs produced. The HF did not start production until 1985. It's not a fast car by any means. but it is very light and it drives fine in my opinion and it is fast enough to keep up with traffic. fast enough to drive 80mph on the highway if you so desire. This car is basically the sweet spot in my opinion of power. aerodynamics and fuel economy. I have a friend that has a Smart. this CRX gets much better fuel economy and has a lot more cargo capacity.
I've tracked my fuel economy extensively. and my best tank average was 57. 9mpg. I've gotten this twice during long trips. A more realistic figure is anywhere from 45-55mpg with everyday driving. Last year I took off the stock exhaust system and put on a tube header with a custom full stainless exhaust that I had made for the car. It's beautiful. but it did decrease fuel economy. I still have the stock exhaust. I actually have 2 complete stock exhaust systems included with the car. so you can convert it back if you desire.
I've owned this CRX for 6 years. and planned to keep it forever. The only reason I'm selling is because I bought a larger car to replace it. and I don't need to own 4 cars. If I can't sell it. then I will hold on to it because I really do love this car and I think that shows in the condition of the car and how I have cared for it. I've been collecting spare parts for the past 6 years and I have quite the stash of parts that comes along with the car. which I will detail later in this ad. There was only a brief period in this car's life that it was not garaged and cared for. Ever since I have owned it. it has always been garaged and never driven in winter. You really shouldn't drive a classic Japanese car like this in the winter because they are very prone to rusting. With all the salt they use around here. it would rust through a car like this in a couple of seasons. That's why you will never see one of these around in this condition. I'm only interested in selling to a collector. or someone who will appreciate this car. not someone who is going to abuse it.
When I bought this car in 2010. it had 70K miles on it. Now it has 131K so I have driven the car about 10. 00 miles per year. I've never had any issues with it because it is meticulously maintained and in excellent mechanical condition. In May of this year. I drove the car from MA to Key West. FL and back without a single issue. You can drive this car anywhere and it is super reliable. I'm kind of a perfectionist about cars and I have kept a spreadsheet of all work done to the car since I have owned it. and the list is quite long. All manufacturer's recommended maintenance is fully up to date. I have records showing this. I have done all the work myself including painting the car semi-gloss black because the original paint was in bad condition. The car was originally red and silver.
Modifications that I have done to the car:
switched from recessed SAE headlamps to EDM (European Domestic Market) headlamps imported from Germany. The parts for this alone cost $400.
(The European headlamps put more light on the road. work much better. and are also less annoying to oncoming drivers. I also think that they look better on the car and this is a popular upgrade that people do to these cars. )
The car was painted with Semi-gloss black (John Deere Blitz Black) in 2011.
the wheels are from a 1985 Prelude. Original wheels were steelies (I don't have them)
Seats are out of a 1989 Prelude Si - the original seats are included but they are uncomfortable in comparison
Shifter linkage rebuilt with Delrin bushings and a stainless adjustable short-throw shifter
Custom stainless exhaust system with a headman header (the header is not stainless but the rest is) - the oil pan was swapped to an Si oil pan in order for the header to fit
The whole car is tinted with 20% tint which is very high quality and will never fade. - I've had the tint on there since 2011
custom non-slip cargo mat and cargo area anchors
The Bad:
the windshield has a crack and will need to be replaced. I have an extra windshield for the car but it is probably a better idea to have a new one installed.
The AC does not work. I rebuilt the whole AC system and it was working great earlier this summer. but the compressor gave out.
I can explain what needs to be done to repair it permanently. A different type of compressor needs to be swapped in that will work better with r134a.
There are a couple areas where rust is starting. but it is early enough that it can be completely cut out and repaired. I have the skills and the tools to do this. but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Specifically. the rear wheel arches. especially on the passenger's side. The rust has never been repaired previously. This is super common for these cars and every one I have seen has been rusted out much worse than this. Even keeping the car garaged and not driving it in winter. it is still susceptible to rust.
Parts Included:
As you can see from the pictures. I have quite a few parts included with the car. and everything I have is not pictured. Everything in the garage is included with the car. I stripped 4 rusted out CRXs for parts. I sold a lot of the parts. but everything else will be included. There is at least $3000-$4000 of parts here if you were to sell them on ebay or craigslist.
4x brand new SS braided brake hoses. ready for installation. I just haven't put them on yet.
rebuilt Si engine and transmission. complete
Si engine without head or transmission
1986 HF engine with transmission. Mostly complete. Would need a rebuild. rings are shot.
I drove all the cars that these engines came out of.
2x extra hatches
3 sets of extra doors
extra hood
front and rear bumpers
lots of extra plastic trim pieces - these break easily and are very fragile and sought after.
set of OEM fenders in decent condition. They've been repaired. Just as an FYI. I sold a set of mint OEM front fenders for $1000. These are super super rare and impossible to find.
The set I am including is not perfect but they can be repaired and you would never know the difference.
2 extra OEM exhaust systems
2 OEM exhaust manifolds and downpipes
Si tube header in very good condition
2 extra wheels and tires - these are 1985 prelude wheels that match what is on the car
way too many other small parts to list. I have boxes and boxes of parts and I only have less than half of them shown in the pictures. I'm still sorting through the rest.
