1988 BMW M5 for sale
Current customer rating: (344 votes ) based onSelling my 1988 E28 M5. It has 106. XX original miles. is rust free. is completely stock except for a Conforti chip. and a shift kit. It has the original paint. It is like stepping into a time machine and being transported back to 1988. There is too much to list here to fully cover the work I have done to over the past two years. but I will provide an overview. I am only selling due medical condition. I planned to keep this car but unfortunately I must sell. Here are the details:
History
I purchased this car two years ago from my brother's neighbor. The car was in their family since new. It was purchased by my brother's neighbor's brother in New Jersey. He drove it for a couple of years and then sold it to his parents in Florida. They had it as a second car in Florida until it came back up north in 2011 when my brother's neighbor got it from his mother as she was getting too old to drive.
The body is rust free having spent most of its life in Florida. The paint is original and there are some very minor dings here and there you need to look for to notice – not unexpected on a car of its age. You can still see under the car where there are remnants of cozmoline they used to spray on cars before they shipped over from Europe. The engine bay. engine included. still shows evidence of cozmoline. Some dealers were more aggressive at removing it than others. but I decided not to remove it is how it was when delivered. I replaced the windshield last fall and there were no signs of rust of the A pillars or cowling. I have photos for interest buyers. The wheels are original to the car. I was going to repaint them. but I decide not to because upon realizing I had to sell I wanted to leave them as they were so a potential buyer can see their true condition. According to the original owner. someone backed into to it at the left front at a parking lot in FL sometime in the mid 90's. It looks like they replaced the hood and left front fenders as they are the only panels without VIN stickers.
Engine/Transmission
The engine runs perfectly. I recently adjusted the valves and had the injectors cleaned and balanced by Marren Injection. I have replaced all the vacuum hoses. throttle body boots. intake boot. plugs. distributor cap and rotor. thermostat. coolant reservoir. throttle position switch. fuel pressure regulator. fuel pumps and filter. The previous owner replaced the muffler (still has the sticker on it). I believe it has the original clutch as I have no record of it being replaced. It feels perfect and grabs as it should. I installed an Autosolutions short shift kit and replaced the guibo disc at the same time.
Brakes
I originally replaced the rotors and pads all around and recently upgraded to E34 calipers. pads and rotors. I installed stainless lines all around. It brakes straight and strong. It will come with all the original calipers. rotors and pads.
Suspension
I replaced the rear self-leveling system with OEM Motorsports springs as found on the euro version. I sourced them through VAC. It has Bilstein sports and new front strut mounts and rear upper shock mounts. Every suspension bushing has been replaced with OEM bushings. including rear trailing arm and subframe bushings. I went with Powerflex for the sway bar bushings but other than that I kept it all stock and OEM. It will come with all the original springs and shocks if you wish to retro-fit.
Interior
I just had the front seats redone at a cost of $2. 00. 00. The passenger seat was actually quite good but the outside bolster on the driver's seat began to rip where the seatbelt would contact it over the years. Plus. the Florida sun had taken its toll on them. I replaced the dash because again. the Florida sun had taken its toll here as well (the price you pay for a rust free Florida body). I installed a new. OEM shifter and boot ($350. 00!). The back seats look as if no one ever sat there. but they do show a little age. The carpets are in excellent shape. I do not have the original floor mats but installed Weathertechs to protect the carpet. It has a Momo Cavalino steering wheel I sourced NOS from Spain. This was the wheel Ferrari used on its cars in the 80's. I liked it because it is not too small at 360mm and is period correct. I have the original BMW Motorsports wheel in excellent condition which will come with the car.
My goal when I bought this car was to bring it back to the way it was the day it came off the showroom floor as a preservation project. Everything that needs to be replaced/maintained has been done. It drives as new and delivers a driving experience you cannot get from cars today. It is amazing when you drive this after driving a new. present day car and realize how far away from a pure driving experience manufacturers have taken us. BMW included. Current Hagerty valuation has Good E28 M5s at 39K and Excellent at 59K. I am confident this car is well on the north side of Good side of the scale.
