RESERVE DRASTICALLY LOWERED

The first generation of the BMW M5 was the fastest production sedan in the world when it was built. with a 0-60 time of 6. 5 seconds. and a top speed of 148 mph. It is also among the rarest modern BMW models in the world. with total production of just 2. 91 cars. The M5 was based on the E28 chassis shared with the 535i. but included a more powerful engine based on the original BMW M1 sports car. The engine was a 3. 5-liter DOHC inline six rated at 256 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. The engine was coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. and all M5s included a limited slip differential. The M5's list price in the United States was $46. 00 in 1988. Collectors simply cannot go wrong with a good condition M5 of this generation. As one of the rarest BMWs. and one of the best-performing. the cars have maintained good value and there's every reason to believe they will continue to be popular.

This 1988 BMW M5 has 176k miles and benefits from a recently replaced interior in the original tan color. The car retains all of its original paint. and it remains nearly stock mechanically. An upgraded Borla exhaust is fitted. and we eliminated the self leveling suspension in favor of non-adjustable Bilstein struts with conventional springs all around. The car has been driven just 2k miles over ten years of ownership and has service records dating back to 2000. This M5 is sold with a clean California title in the seller's name. This M5 is outwardly unmodified. and the Borla exhaust installed looks similar to the stock item. Original wheels and trim are all still fitted. and the extensive black plastic trim is in good condition. This is among the rarest of the BMW M-Cars. with just 2. 91 produced.

Small flaws are pointed out in the photos. one is a filled-in chip on the corner of the right rear quarter panel just outboard of the trunk spoiler. and the other is a distortion in the plastic rear bumper trim as seen above. Some imperfections in the finish can also be seen on the bumper itself. The rubber and plastic trim appears otherwise in good condition with minimal fading.

The interior remains in a nearly stock configuration. though the seats have been reupholstered by a BMW technician using correct tan leather. The stereo has been upgraded with a modern single DIN head unit with a removable faceplate. and the dash is free of cracks. The center console and handbrake lever have been wrapped in leather. The carpets are original. and appear very clean especially considering their light color and the car's mileage. The rear cabin area is similarly well trimmed. and the hard front seatbacks are in good condition. All of the interior features are thought to work correctly. including the recently recharged A/C. power windows. and trip computer. Brand new tires in factory spec size.

The 176k miles shown are believed to be accurate. below are mileage figures from each time the car has changed hands.

1988-2000- First owner in Texas. new-148k miles August of 2000- Registered in Northern California with 148k miles October of 2003- Registered in Nevada with 162k miles May of 2005. Registered in California with 168k miles 2006- Seller purchases the car with 174k miles

The North American version of the E28 M5 received the S38 inline-six. which was derived from the M88 used elsewhere. The valvetrain in the S38 was slightly different. nbsp;and included a duplex timing chain for improved longevity.

The extensive Inspection II service was performed prior to the seller purchasing the vehicle at 172k miles.  The last valve adjustment was performed less than 5k miles ago. Two notable mechanical modifications are present. a Borla exhaust and an SLS delete. The replacement suspension is non-adjustable and uses Bilstein struts with conventional springs at all four corners.

The car handles very well with the current setup - drives on rails.

Completely clean car fax and clean California Smog report included. Great car for any BMW collection or your first M5.
