With a heavy heart I'm advertising my 1975 Volkswagen MK1 Golf Swallowtail for sale.

Having owned a plethora of Mk1 golfs over a ten year span I finally managed to find what many consider the holy grail. a "swallowtail".  The term refers to the rear panel. Only the very early cars have the swallowtail panel. 1974 - 1975 and a few in 1976. very few swallowtails remain. This is. one of. if not the oldest. Volkswagen Golf in the UK.

This car was found on the French / Spanish boarder in the Basque country early this year which is where it has lived its entire life. I jumped on a plane. inspected the car. then embarked driving it over 1000 miles back to England. The term "Runs like a sewing machine" probably gets thrown around all to often but this car didn't miss a beat.
If you walked into the Volkswagen garage in 1975. asked for their latest model then ticked every extras box on the options list this is the car which would have turned up.  The car is a Golf LS which means it's got all of the rarest parts. Twin chrome flag mirrors. nbsp;aluminium door kicks. chrome handles. nbsp;postie rear lights. small rain tray. nbsp;4 doors. metallic paint. heated screen. horse hair filled seats. automatic gearbox. The list goes on. it even has its original Blaupunkt sterio which still works perfectly.
The interior has also survived. its nearly perfect. The rear bench has no tears and the factory "X" parcel shelf is still intact.
When the car arrived in England it went straight in for an MOT where a slight issue with its indicators was fixed. a few simple niggles sorted and it has now passed. The car then had new leads. nbsp;distributor. filters. plugs. tyres. condenser and an oil change.
It was then put on adjustable and uprated suspension to make it slightly lower. We forget how high the original suspension makes these cars sit and having owned a few Mk1 Golfs in my time uprating the suspension and bringing its ride height down a touch only improves things. It makes the cars stance look slightly more modern without sacrificing the ride. Either way. the car can very easily be wound up to bring it back to its original ride height or put back on its stock suspension entirely. Or obviously wound down further.     The Ronal wheels which the car is on in the final pictures  are very rare. especially face mounted with ronal stamped lips. They have been refurbished by Mike the polisher then have had brand new tyres fitted. The wheels can go with the car but i also understand that selling the car with them on adjusts the cars value significantly. If you're interested in the car and not the wheels I can get creative with wheel options and prices. I also have many more magnesium and rare wheels which could potentially go if a new owner wants so go down that route.
This is a car which is offered in unrestored condition. It has many little scuffs. dents and bangs. it wears them with pride. If I were to keep it I would personally leave it unrestored. I also understand that acquiring such a solid base for a ground up restoration is a very appealing prospect for enthusiasts too and it would look truly stunning with some of the dings sorted and some giving the paint some attention.
There is very little corrosion. some surface rust at best. As far as I'm aware there is no rot and no welding. The car has been owned by one woman for the last 45 years and has been used for the occasional shop run and not much else. The dash has suffered slightly from the sun where it has a few small cracks around the vents but that is about it.
This is an opportunity to acquire the rarest of the rare. With cult classic values currently soaring it's a safe investment either in its current guise or restored to concourse and turned into a show stopper. The car has never been to a show. been publicised or had a magazine feature. One for the collector. the investor or the Volkswagen Golf enthusiast.
The car is now Tax exempt as of last month meaning it's one of the only water-cooled Volkswagens to be exempt from road tax. It also has 12 months MOT. The car has covered 125k Kilometres so around 75k miles. thats the equivalent of around 1500 miles a year.   The car has its original books. nbsp;original tool kit. many stamps and lots of history. It's currently going through the hoops regarding its UK registration which should be finished imminently ready for the new owner to drive away on its new plates (it will also be eligible to have black and silver number plates when it gets its new registration number which will be fairly novel).
It was not my intention to sell this car. this one was supposed to stay. This is the pinnacle of MK1 Golf ownership in my opinion. having owned six of them including another swallowtail over the last 10 years I can confirm this is the best one I have owned or seen. It truly is a one of a kind.
Unfortunately circumstances have changed at my end and I can't keep them all.
I am open to offers. I know "I am happy to keep it if it doesnt go for what im after" is a phrase thrown around car adverts often but I am truly happy to hold onto it. I've been driving it around all day and it really is a beautiful thing.
The car can be viewed at anytime if arranged in advance. I am also more than happy to help with world wide shipping.   Ultimately I'm looking for cash but I may PX with a BMW 2002. Porsche 912. Lancia Fulvia or something of that nature. Many Thanks.
