Please read description and my terms before asking questions/bidding. I am a Land Rover Series 2 enthusiast not a dealer but do not want any timewasters. There is no buy it now- auction will run to end. Viewing is strongly recommended but buyer will not be disappointed. Ideally would like this to go to a land rover enthusiast who appreciates and understands these wonderful machines. I wouldn't recommend driving vehicle a long distance home- best to trailer it over 50 miles or so.
I know an excellent. reasonably-priced and professional (insured) car transporter if required.
Cash on collection or bank transfer within 10 days of auction end (or deposit of  £100 at end of auction. collection within 14 days max).
Vehicle is sold as seen- no warranty or returns.

Not a concours showpiece but has undergone comprehensive. careful and sympathetic rebuild involving a great deal of new parts.

First registered in Oct '71 (Dudley. West Midlands) with H-suffix chassis # this was last year of Series 2a production (88” Series 2a production ended Aug 31st '71). With it's proper metal dash. wire grille and stronger late 2a gearbox- far superior to the early series 3s.

These late 2as with lights in wing are pretty rare having only been made from '69-'71 (hence why I saved it!).

Originally petrol. UK RHD civilian model (241 chassis prefix) & green (from bulkhead basecoat).

SUMMARY

Tax-exempt. 12 months MOT. fully-serviced.

88” rust-free chassis. bulkhead & front panel.

8:1 compression 2. 25 3 main bearing leaded petrol engine. Zenith carb. alternator.

E-suffix 2a gearbox (non-synchro 1st/2nd gear. non-overdrive). std diffs.

Parabolic springs. pro-comp shocks. 7. 50 R16 tyres

11” TLS servo-assisted front brakes. standard rear brakes

Halogen headlights. self-parking wipers. self-cancelling indicator switch. towball and socket.

CHASSIS/BULKHEADS

Main rails/crossmembers mostly solid/unwelded but have done some localized weld repairs (e. g. by rear crossmember/bulkhead outriggers).

Bulkhead has had footwells and door pillars replaced/repaired.

Front panel has had bottom edge replaced.

Chassis/bulkheads painted in zinc-phosphate primer. black gloss topcoat and underseal.

ENGINE/COOLING/FUEL

Engine has had recent head gasket. new water pump. thermostat. fan belt. cooling hoses. core plugs. contacts/condensor. spark plugs. engine oil/filter. sump gasket. air filter-elbow hose. air filter/breather serviced. valve clearances set. Repainted in duck egg blue with many new gaskets. refitted with new engine rubber mounts and a new full exhaust system (with new mounts).

New fuel tank fitted with new pickup gauze and in-line filter. New Bearmach "Zenith" carb set-up properly. refitted with new gaskets (engine bay photo shows previous Zenith carb).

CLUTCH/BRAKES

New copper and flexible rubber pipes fitted throughout. new master and slave cylinders fitted for brakes and clutch.

New OEM clutch friction plate fitted with new flywheel spigot bush.

Front/rear brakes and handbrake overhauled with new shoes and springs throughout. new rear drums. New vacuum hose for servo. New rear oil seal for handbrake.

TRANSMISSION

Gearbox has had oil change. refitted with new mounts. New speedo cable fitted.

Propshafts fitted with new UJs and gaitors as required.

Differentials removed checked and refitted with new gaskets and oil.

Wheel bearings replaced as required and refitted with new seals/gaskets.

 STEERING

Original 2a steering box rebuilt with new bearings/gasket/oil. New upper column bearing.

New track rod ends/rubber gaitors as required.

Good used chrome swivels refitted with new gaskets/wiper seals and oil.

SUSPENSION/WHEELS/TYRES

Good quality parabolic springs fitted (a softer ride than original springs with better axle articulation. no issues with leaves fusing together with rust!).

Pro-comp ES3000 shocks with new bushes and gaitors to allow for increased height/spring rate/articulation of parabolics- shocks painted black from the original white (too garish for a series 2!). New check straps to rear to protect standard propshaft.

Proper wider 5. 5J 109” wheel rims are fitted (repainted inside and out with limestone enamel) to allow fitment of larger diameter 7. 50 R16 tyres (an option for the 88” from new). The large circumference not only improves stance but increases gearing/MPG of land rover. The calibration of speedo type fitted should still give accurate speed.

Tyres are matched Lassa LTAs in good condition- same tread pattern as Michelin XZLs (I think made under licence in Turkey). Hard wearing & good in mud/sand/snow but also comfortable on road. Matched spare with ok tread. rim not repainted.

ELECTRICS/WASH-WIPE

Negative earth electrical system- good battery.

Correct solder-on brass bullets used (no crimp-on connectors). Correct tracer colours/ cotton loom tape used where possible.

Good used braided loom re-wrapped and fitted to front. New loom from front to rear.

New wiring for headlights. Good used loom for wiper motor.

New toggle switches for panel lights/washers. New decals for dash switches.

Alternator conversion (with correct bracket) fitted in place of dynamo/voltage regulator.

New headlamp buckets and H4 halogen headlamps. Correct floor-mounted dip switch.

Side/brake and indicator lamps are new.

New temp sender/oil sender/fuel sender. Choke warning system works (Otter switch on cyl head).

Indicator switch (excellent chromework!) rebuilt with new self-cancelling rubber wheel and loom. Correct wheel-centre horn push.

Wiper motor and rack regreased. refitted with new genuine wheel boxes. wiper adaptors and wiper arms/blades.

Central defender washer jet fitted (does both screens) with genuine defender washer bottle. new washer motor and pipework.

BODYWORK ETC.

Bodywork repainted in etch primer (aluminium) or zinc phosphate (steel) with bronze green enamel topcoat (sprayed). Many areas (e. g. bonnet. truck cab. tailgate) repainted from bare metal.

Cappings etc resprayed with Rustoleum Hard Hat Galva Plus galvanizing spray.

Bodywork pretty straight but mostly used so not perfect (some minor dents etc). Bonnet. truck cab roof VGC.

New wing-front (passenger side). new sill trim panels both sides. new galvanized under-wing mudshields and steering box cover.

New door top/runners passenger side. good used driver's side. Correct 2a door top window catches. door check rods and hinges (refitted with new hinge-pin kits).

Original door bottoms repaired (bottom frames welded). New door lock barrel (driver's side). passenger side locked from inside (non-key lock).

New tailgate centre rib fitted. new tailgate chains and sleeves. new tailgate-tub buffer blocks.

Truck cab fully stripped and rebuilt with new window runners- locking catches work!!

New bonnet rest strip. span >  door seals (defender one-piece used). vent seals. b/head-w/screen & w/screen/roof seal. all rubber seals for truck cab replaced with new.

New rear mudflaps fitted along with good used aluminium grab handles.

INTERIOR

New standard vinyl seats on restored seatbox with static runners. under-seat tool box.

New static 3-point seatbelts fitted (driver/passenger). lapbelt for middle seat.

Tailored “autograph” rubber floor mats.

FIXINGS

Metric fixings used for general fixing (I am not a total rivet counter)- stainless for exterior parts (e. g. truck cab guttering. tailgate. grab handles) but zinc-plated elsewhere.

Spring washers and slotted screws used rather than nylocs and Philip's head. respectively.

BAD POINTS/THINGS NEEDED

Land Rover has been carefully rebuilt but not perfect by any means- best to view if possible.

I am not a professional sprayer and there are minor imperfection and orange peel in paint but still a very presentable job (I don't think land rovers should be mirror finish).

No major oil leaks etc that I have noticed but a slight bit of oil on lower gearbox drain plug.

Minor surface rust here and there (e. g. exhaust manifold and system etc).

NO overdrive or heater. Spare wheel bracket in tub needs bolt. clamp. wing nut.

These land rovers often need tinkering with so best to be mechanically minded/practical if you want to cherish one!! E. g. head gasket has been re-torqued but may need wheel bearings and brakes tightening once these have bedded in.

IFOR WILLIAMS CANOPY WITH SOLID TOP TAILGATE WITH WINDOW

I was going to fit an Ifor Williams canopy with solid rear door (with window) but left this as buyer may wish to fit a more classic looking ¾ canvas tilt. I can supply and even fit Ifor canopy that I have for EXTRA COST by separate negotiation. I prefer these to a canvas tilt but buyer may not agree.

Is this still available?

Is your LR pickup still for sale?
Everything looks good, if it's not a silly question, why wouldn't you recommend driving it (possibly a long way) home?
Where in UK are you? (for a viewing). Small point, but does it have a (functioning) heater? Thanks, Julian
