numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts. but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example. all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. Most of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description* VIN 1Z87L8S409081 The first digit. "1. quot; indicated the Chevrolet division of GM. The "Z" is the series. Corvette. The "87" is the body style. 2-door sport coupe. The fifth digit is the engine. L. correct for an L48 car. The sixth digit. "8. quot; indicates the model year. 1978. The "S" is the plant where the car was produced. St. Louis. The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 9. 81st Corvette made for 1978. Body Build Date C11 "C" corresponds to November. and "11" is the eleventh day of the month meaning this Corvette's body build date is November 11. 1977. Engine Code V1028 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint. MI plant.   The "10" is the tenth month of year and the "28" is the twenty-eighth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on October 28. 1977.   This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car. Suffix Code CHW This means the motor was intended for an L48 Corvette with a manual transmission. which is correct for this car. Engine VIN Stamping 409081 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN. 409081. are stamped on the engine pad meaning this engine is original to this car. Engine Block Casting Number 3970010 The engine block has the correct 3970010 casting number. which is correct for a 1978 Corvette. Engine Block Casting Date J 25 7 "J" is October. "25" is the twenty-fifth day of the month. and the "7" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine block was cast on October 25. 1977. which is correct as it predates the assembly date. Intake Manifold Casting Number 346249 The intake manifold has the correct 14007376 casting number. Intake Manifold Casting Date J 25 7 "J" is October. "25" is the twenty-fifth day of the month. and the "7" is the last digit of the calendar year so the intake manifold was cast on October 25. 1977. which is correct as it predates the assembly date. Carburetor 17058203 The original carburetor has the correct stamping for a 1978 L48 Corvette with a manual transmission. The "170" means the carb was produced after 1976. The fourth digit. "5. quot; means the carb was built in the 1976 - 1979 production run. The fifth digit. "8. quot; means it was built for the 1978 model year. The six digit. "2. quot; indicates that it is a 4BBL carb. The seventh digit. "0. quot; means is was built for the Chevrolet division of GM. The last digit. "3. quot; means it was intended for use in a manual transmission car such as this. Carburetor Date Code 2647 The firth three digits. "264. quot; indicate the 264th day of the year. The last digit. "7. quot; is the year in which the carburetor was produced. 1977. So this carburetor was stamped on September 24. 1977. Windshield AG The "A" is September and "G" is 1977 so the windshield is original. made in September of 1977.   This is correct as it predates the build date of the car. Driver Window LG The "L" is August and "G" is 1977 so this window is original. made in August of 1977.   This is correct as it predates the build date of the car. condition

Exterior

The Silver Metallic exterior is in good driver condition. As one can see in the photos the finish has a great gloss and nice shine. Both door open and shut nicely as do the hood and headlights. The YJ8 aluminum wheels and center caps are in beautiful condition with a brilliant finish and no curb rash. The BF Goodrich Radial TA tires are virtually brand new and show almost no wear. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There are some touch-ups and other small blemishes around the car that were too tiny to show up in the pictures. but nothing that is really noticeably from about ten feet away. As one can see in the many photos of the underside of the car. it is very clean and this Corvette has absolutely NO RUST ISSUES. The frame is totally solid with no rust around the "key hole" are in front of the rear tire and I have seen no evidence of corrosion around the windshield. which are the two most notorious spots for rust on a C3 Corvette.

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALL of the glass on this Corvette. even the windshield. is date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of November 11. 1977 (C11). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

The car looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The Black interior in this Corvette is in fantastic condition. The seats are in excellent condition with no rips. split seams. or signs of wear. They are not worn in the typical area where the driver gets in and out. The carpet is excellent condition with no holes. or stains. This includes the rear carpet. which is often neglected. The door panels are in wonderful shape with no splits or cracks and. unlike many Corvettes of this age. they fit well and tight to the door. The door pulls are solid and intact. The dash and console look awesome overall with no sun fading. there is a small blemish on the right corner of the dash pad. The jack and jack handle are still with the car. stored correctly behind the passenger seat. and pictured below showing the original decals on the compartment lid. The original spare is still with the car and still has the nubs on it. This Corvette features a modern radio and sound system with hookups for an iPod or smartphone. Most importantly. this radio is a Corvette specific unit made for this car so the original dash was no cut or modified for the installation.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in very good mechanical condition. The previous owner of the car is a railroad mechanic and said he spent about $3. 00 in parts on the car. It starts right away every time. runs well. and idle smooth. It drives great and feels nice on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph. shifting through all the gears. braking to stoplight. and going through some curves. Please note that there are no vibrations or strange noises and the car performs quite well overall. The clutch feels good. the car shifts nice. and does no pop out of gear. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast. Also. the engine compartment is beautifully clean. detailed. correct and complete as one can see in the photos. Even the upper ignition shielding and original catalytic converter are still in place.

The radio works as do all the exterior lights. wipers. horn. and all of the gauges with the obvious exception of the clock. The blower works on all speeds. The a/c works and blows cold. The vacuum system for the headlights works correctly. Also. the headlights go up properly with either the headlight switch or vacuum override switch. There complete operation form both switches can be viewed in the video below. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car. especially with the 4-Speed and  T-tops out on a beautiful day.

The car runs and drives as well as it looks.

Overall Condition

Overall. this 1978 Corvette is in magnificent driver condition. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing. and as any buyer can see this Corvette is extremely correct. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased considerably over the past several years. They are secure and wise investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
