Having modernized its Series 61. 62 and 60 Special lines with all-new bodies in 1948. Cadillac introduced its all-new overhead valve V8 engine for 1949. More compact and lighter than its predecessor. the new V8 was designed from the outset to accommodate higher compression ratios and power output. With ingenious “slipper” pistons. reliable operation at higher engine speeds was now possible. Continuously refined. improved and enlarged over the years. this basic engine powered Cadillac models through the late 1970s.

Pioneering road tester Tom McCahill found the new Cadillac models to be perhaps the quickest and fastest American-built cars on the market. In fact. despite considerable weight. only the Oldsmobile 88 could match a Cadillac's strong performance. Consequently. the marque enjoyed a growing performance reputation. in addition to its renowned level of quality. style. luxury and exclusivity.

Of the four Cadillac series offered in 1949. the most popular was Series 62. offered in Sedan. Coupe. Coupe DeVille and Convertible Coupe form. The Convertible Coupe came standard with an upgraded interior and power-operated windows.

Beautifully presented. this outstanding example was part of a noted private collection and. as such. benefits from proper. professional maintenance. All in all. the car remains in excellent condition; the black exterior finish. bodywork and brightwork. from the “Dagmars” in front to the bumper at the rear. are all beautifully presented. Exterior features include a period-style spotlight as well as whitewall tires and very attractive “sombrero” wheel covers. The interior is likewise outstanding. with rich red leather upholstery. matching wool carpeting and such features as an AM radio and heater.

With its potent V8 engine. Hydra-Matic transmission and luxurious appointments it goes without saying that this Cadillac is a wonderfully comfortable driver. Alternatively it would certainly find itself at home at various shows and events. if so desired.
