1977 Oldsmobile Toronado XS

Here is a chance to own a American Classic Oldsmobile Toronado XS with unique (in its day) rear wrap around window. I bought the car 2 years ago but due to other projects and moving to a smaller property I am ready to sell. below is a full description from the guy I bought it from and very close to the condition it is in now. /span>

VIN: 3Z57K7M726559

I have for sale one of the most unique American classic cars and certainly the only example in Australia.   For model year 1977. Oldsmobile introduced a new model – the Toronado XS. a dramatic new coupe with the massive panoramic backlight and a tinted-glass power sunroof. Utilising a new hot-bent-wire technology to form sharp corners in the glass. the rear window wrapped from B-pillar to B-pillar.   XS by name – excess by nature!

The XS did not come cheaply. On top of the Toronado Brougham sticker price of USD8134. this stunning styling combination required a further USD2500. hence the very low production number of just 2713.   The total Toronado production for 1977 was a significant 37. 85.  1978 would see that last of the large. bullet-proof front wheel drive coupes – first blowing the American public away in 1966.   1979 would see a dramatic scaling down of this model in all ways – size. engine and the famous FWD transmission assembly.

This magnificent. original example was purchased new in Sacramento. CA by Walter Pereira in May. 1977.   It remained his pride and joy until purchased by myself in 2012.  As with most luxury Toronado Coupes. there is a long list of standard equipment that includes the bullet proof and powerful 403-cid Rocket V-8 with electronic spark timing for improved fuel economy.

Additionally. the vast array of luxury options includes;

  • Four-season climate control air conditioning
  • The unique modified TH400 auto transmission
  • Power operated Moon Roof (works perfectly)
  • Variable-ratio power steering
  • Power front disc brakes
  • Electric clock (not working)
  • Thick cut-pile carpeting
  • Deluxe wheel covers
  • AM/FM stereo radio with 8-Track player (fully functioning)
  • Power trunk release
  • Cruise control (not working at present)
  • Power windows
  • Power door locks
  • Six-way power driver & front passenger seats
  • Dual exhaust

The new for 1977 403 ci engine developed 190 and torque to 325 pound-feet of torque at 2400 rpm. Believe me; the performance is quite remarkable for what on paper appears to be a detuned. low emission V8. Please note that the A/C system will need upgrading to R134 gas.

Thus far. this incredible survivor has travelled just 51300 miles (at the point of writing) since the day it left the showroom. Clearly. the overall condition certainly reflects this mileage. The body is almost perfect. completely rust free and with one or two tiny dents.   Much of the factory applied paint is still on the car and has good lustre. with the usual small number of scratches and chips that would be normal for a 35 year old vehicle. I have replaced the bumper fillers (the plastic moulded extensions that “fill” the gap between the body and the bumpers – a cosmetic solution to US Legislated 5 mph front/rear impact tests so that no damage resulted to the car's lights. safety equipment. and engine).   They were of course. painted to the match the body finish.

Standard fitment on the XS was a partial vinyl covered roof.  This cosmetic covering is still in exceptional condition. with minor discolorations here and there.   Importantly. there is NO bubbling or “lumps” under the vinyl.   The marked lack of fading evident in the interior would indicate that Walter garaged the car constantly.

The chrome bumpers. hubcaps and other bright work are in mint condition. Underneath. the floors. all other metal sheeting and frame components are rock solid and rust free.   The engine bay has not been touched and as you can see. is exceptionally clean and correct.   There are NO oil leaks from anywhere! The only part required to complete the exterior for registration is a front RH blinker assembly – you can see that it's missing in one of the images above.   I am currently sourcing this part now via various Toronado contacts in the US.

Incredible is the only word to describe the interior!  The marked lack of fading evident in the interior would indicate that Walter garaged the car constantly. The superbly comfortable velour seats. perfect dash. gauges. hood lining are all in mint condition. Carpets are unmarked with just a slight burn mark on the factory full width front floor mat. Probably. the only less than perfect interior fittings are the steering wheel (the gold inlay laminated has been removed at some stage) and the seal belts which show some discolouration.

The trunk carpet is perfect and all the original wheel changing hardware is still in place including the untouched space saver and inflation cylinder.   A spare full size rim and tyre is included (see pic).

Mechanically. little work was required upon importation.   The vehicle arrived with a boot full of parts. most important of which was a set of new drive shafts (remember that they drive the front wheels).   These were fitted along with a new electronic distributor. rear shock absorbers and a comprehensive engine service was completed. There are no mechanical issues and she runs. steers and drives as it would have in 1977. The front disc brakes stop the car on a dime and the dual exhaust is leak free.

The correct white-wall tyres are brand new and the fuel tank has been flushed. Many original books and manuals come with the vehicle including;

  • 1977 Oldsmobile Toronado owner's manual
  • 1977 Oldsmobile Maintenance Schedule
  • 1977 Oldsmobile Consumer Information booklet
  • General Tire Limited Adjustment Policy flyer
  • Delco GM AM-FM Stereo Radio manual
  • The “What Is It? Goodyear Custom Mini-Space Spare Tire manual

I also have a small case filled with 8 Track cassettes. The car is currently unregistered. however for a NSW resident buyer. I will include a blue slip allowing full registration if desired.

The last of these big Oldsmobile front wheel drive coupes are beautifully built and a fun and inexpensive classic to own.   They drive like a modern car and are simple to maintain. using normal unleaded fuel.   My 1977 Toronado XS is a definite “no disappointments” classic as well as being a very rare and sought after Toronado variant. Any inspection is welcome.   My asking price is not much more that it cost to import and prepare to its current standard. however that being said. I am open to sensible offers.

Please call me if you are interested and I can answer any questions you might have. I can also assist in interstate transport if required.

Thanks

Dave
