Launched at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show. the Jaguar E-Type was
nothing short of a revelation. With its heady blend of supercar
performance. breathtaking styling and low price tag. the newcomer
left rivals reeling and customers clamouring. Early sportscar
racing success at the hands of Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori
amongst others helped cement its reputation. Built as a monocoque
with a front sub-frame to cradle the engine. the model's
combination of all-round independent suspension rack and pinion
steering and four-wheel disc brakes gave it excellent road holding
and handling capabilities.

There are two schools of thought regarding classic cars; do we
a) polish them to within an inch of their lives. keep them from any
sign of a puddle and use them sparingly on a select few Sundays of
the year when there is barely a cloud in the sky. or do we b) enjoy
them in the manner for which they have been designed and focus our
attention under the bonnet to ensure they are ready to be blasted
down a country lane at a moment's notice regardless of what the
weathermen say.

This matching numbers. 4. 2 litre coupé. presented in opalescent
blue with re-trimmed blue leather. definitely falls within the
latter category. This very original and rust free example is
a true driver's car from which it is clear the owner takes more
delight in driving and mechanically caring for his pride and joy
than hours spent spit and polishing. Imported some six years ago
from San Diego in California. the owner. being a good mechanic
himself. was immediately impressed by how dry the entire car was
and decided to invest in replacing the exhaust with a new stainless
steel unit. new master cylinders. clutch master and slave cylinder
and new brakes before servicing and then jumping in to enjoy.
Accompanied by a valid MoT test certificate together with old
certificates dating to 2011 and a V5 registration. this is one of
our favourites. It could certainly benefit from a little tlc
but. like us. you may just be tempted to jump straight in and get
on with enjoying the true E-Type experience.
