Oldsmobile : 442 Base for sale
Current customer rating: (272 votes ) based onThis item is being re-listed. This 442 is sold on 10-12-2014 on Ebay but due to an unforeseen personal problem. the buyer was unable to complete the purchase. The Buy It Now price is the selling price from the first auction.
For sale is a rare 1967 Olds 442 with a factory Ford 3 speed transmission. I found the car in a garage and that I have spent a year rebuilding mechanically. The starting price of $8. 46. 18 is the amount I have spent on the car and the rebuild and have receipts for. The history of this car is known. The car was purchased in 1967 for a son's graduation present but it was not driven much. The car was then sold in 1983 to a family friend who rolled the car into a garage. rolled the windows up and left the car inside in the dark till I purchased in in 2013. When I bought it. the water pump and the carb were sitting on the rear seat but everything else was still there. The only thing the first owner changed was having the exhaust pipes re-routed from straight out the back to exit out behind the rear wheels. The car is box stock and complete.
The unique thing about this car is the almost complete lack of options. The only options appear to be an am radio and a tinted front windshield. The car has a front bench seat without an armrest. No power anything and no AC. The car has the original drive train.
The original Ford Dearborn transmission with the original Hurst 442 shifter are still in the car. The Ford Dearborn transmission is a heavy duty 3 speed that was installed as standard equipment on GM muscle cars from 1965 thru 1968. In 1965. GM realized the Borg Warner 3 speeds they were using were not strong enough to handle the power of the big blocks and they started using the Ford transmissions. Of course GM did not want to admit they were using Ford transmissions in their muscle cars so they called them Dearborn transmissions. When I dropped the transmission. it has FOMOCO cast into the housing. It's rare to find an original Dearborn still in the original car. After removing and opening the transmission for inspection I found it to be great inside. It was flushed and a new rear seal was installed and filled with new oil. The shifter was sent out to be re-chromed. It was later re-installed and shifts good for a 47 year old transmission. Of the 24. 33 442's built in 1967. nbsp;only 918 were built with 3 speeds. I've been watching 442's on ebay for the last year and have not seen another factory 3 speed for sale.
The engine appears to be original. The block casting number is 390925E. I removed it and sent it out to be rebuilt with all new internal parts at a cost of $2. 00. The guys at the engine shop said the engine was in great shape and did not need to be re-bored. The engine has the original C heads and X exhaust manifolds still on it. I replaced the water pump. fuel pump. radiator. hoses. nbsp;plugs and wires and replaced the original distributor with an electronic ignition. The carb was sent out to be rebuilt at a cost of $220. The heater core was replaced. A new Die Hard battery was installed with new cables. The old parts go with the car if the buyer wants them.
The rear end is a 10 bolt. It was opened. cleaned and new oil installed. It works fine.
The drum brakes were in great shape but were rebuilt using new shoes. new front brake lines and brake pistons. A new master cylinder was installed and the brake line was flushed. The brakes work fine. The wheel bearings were replaced. All the head lights and tail light and turn signal bulbs were replaced. The wipers work fine.
The front end was rebuilt with new upper and lower ball joints and A frame bushings. The front shocks and springs were replaced. The car drives straight without pulling to the side. The frame was solid but did have some surface rust. I sanded off the surface rust and treated the frame with POR-15.
The body is in good shape with no major dents or dings but needs paint . The original owner had the car re-painted from the factory pale yellow to a maroon color. It was not a quality job. The car does not appear to have ever been in an accident. The only major rust problems was the body panel directly behind the rear windshield. That area was a major problem on all GM A body cars. When I removed the rear windshield. I could look down and see the inside of the trunk. The car was sent out to the body shop to have the body panel replaced. I removed all the interior seats and carpet. The floor pans and the trunk pan were both solid with some surface rust. The rust was removed and the floor pans were treated with POR-15. I installed new carpet and padding before re-installing the seats. The doors were opened and the window rollers were serviced. New water shields were installed in the doors and rear windows. The seat belts were re-installed. New handles for the windows were installed.
The interior needs some work. The front seat has been re-covered sometime in the past and is cracking. The rear seat is also cracking. The door panels are ok with no cracking The headliner needs replacing. I replaced the package tray and insulation and the trunk divider and insulation. The shifter boot was also replaced. The original padded dashboard pat is in good shape. The dash board lights all work including the emergency brake light. Turn signals and emergency flashers all work. Both emergency brake cables were replaced and work fine.
The original bumpers need re-chroming. The tires are ok but are weather cracking due to age. All the rubber seals around the doors and windows need replacing.
The mileage shows approx. 29. 00. This may be the original mileage. Struck to the inside of the trunk lid. I found a warranty card from JC Penny's for a tire purchased in 1977. It listed the mileage at that time as a little over 7. 00 miles.
The bottom line is this car has been re-built mechanically and is ready for the cosmetics. It drives very smooth and solid. If someone is looking for a classic 442 to restore without most of the hard work this car might be the one. If someone wants to prep the body for paint. it can be finished fairly cheaply. I'm thinking solid black and black interior.
The radio and the horns are not working at this time because I have not worked on them yet. The radio needs a power plug and the horn contact in the steering colume may need replacing.
This is a No Reserve auction. The only reason I am selling the car is I have a great deal working on a Porsche and I need the money.
I have a clear Texas title in hand. This car can be driven on the street as a daily driver without doing any further major work. I've driven the car about 200 miles. If there are any questions. please ask. Thanks for looking.
