model description

The 1977 model year is a special one for the Corvette and is considered to be the best of both worlds in some respects by many wtih the more vintage. "Stingray" style rear window and a more modern and comfortable interior. Most notable about 1977 model year was that it was the last year for the straight back window and "Sugar Scoop" rear decklid treatment. The 1978 model year introduced the new large rear window along with the most extensive redesign in the C3 production run. The interior in 1977 was slightly improved to made the driver more comfortable by moving the steering wheel forward two inches. 1977 was also the last year to feature the round gauges. storage pocket. and retain the truly vintage sense of the Stingray cockpit. Many people prefer the more classic look and feel of the early C3's. such as this car. over the 1978-82 model years.

1977 saw the steering column repositioned 2 inches (51 mm) closer to the dashboard to allow a more "arms out" position for the driver. The custom interior with leather seat trim was now standard. with cloth and leather a no cost option. A redesigned center console permitted universal Delco radio options. Auxiliary gauges were restyled and the ammeter was replaced with a voltmeter. The sun visors were redesigned to swivel so as to provide some glare protection from the side as well as the front. Chevrolet responded to the criticism of the previous year's steering wheel with an all new three-spoke leather-wrapped unit. which was well received. Chevrolet featured this new wheel prominently on the front of their new Corvette sales brochure. The new wheel came on all cars fitted with the optional tilt-telescopic steering column which was ordered on all but a few thousand Corvettes. Corvette's refinement as a touring sports car continued as both power steering and power brakes became standard and new options included body-colored sport mirrors. cruise control. and a new convenience group. The convenience group included dome light delay. headlight warning buzzer. underhood light. low fuel warning light. interior courtesy lights. and passenger side visor mirror. Early in production. the engine paint color was changed from Chevy orange to Corporate blue. The “Stingray” script. seen on front fenders since 1969 disappeared. but new cross-flags emblems began appearing on fenders before the model year ended. Windshield posts were now painted black for a “thin pillar” look. A Corvette milestone was reached during 1977 as Chevrolet had built a half million Corvettes since production began in 1953.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts. but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example. all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description* VIN 1Z37L7S425274 The first digit. "1. quot; indicated the Chevrolet division of GM.   The "Z" is the series. Corvette.   The "87" is the body style. 2-door sport coupe.   The fifth digit is the engine. "8. quot; correct for an L48 car.   The sixth digit. Body Build Date H03 "H" corresponds to March. and the 03 is the third day of the month meaning this Corvette body build date is March 3. 1977. Engine Code V0226 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint. MI plant.   The "02" is the second month of year and the "26" is the twenty-sixth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on February 26. 1977.   This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car. Suffix Code CLA This means the motor was intended for an L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission. which is correct for this car. Engine VIN Stamping 425274 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN. 425274. are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car. Distributor Date Code 6M16 The "6" is the last digit of the calendar year. the "M" denotes December. and "16" is the sixteenth day of the month meaning the distributor was made on December 16. 1976.   This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine. Intake Manifold Casting Number 346249 The intake manifold is correct for a 1977 Corvette with an L48 engine. Carburetor Main Body

Please note that this car has a very rare and original Quadrajet produced by Carter. 17057204 The original carburetor has the correct stamping for a 350ci L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission and a/c. All Four Wheels K 1 7 2 9 AZ "K" means the wheels are original Kelsey-Hayes as they should be. the "1" means they were made at the Romulus. MI plant. and the "7" means they were made for the 1977 model year. The "2" is the second month of the year and the "9" is the ninth day of the month. This means the wheels were made on February 9. 1977. "AZ" is a code that was used on wheels intended for a 1977 Corvette. condition

Exterior

The Yellow exterior is in nice driver condition. As one can see in the photos. the paint has a dazzling gloss. deep shine. and smooth finish. This Corvette features some attractive and sporty looking spoilers front and rear that really set this car apart and give it a much improved look. Please note that these are not some aftermarket or JC Whitney style spoilers that were added to the car in poor taste. The spoilers on the car are like the factory D80 style spoilers used on the 1978 Pace Car Edition Corvettes and available as a factory option on the 1979 Corvette. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. there are some touched up spots with specific photos below. There are some small blemishes that were to small or faint to be picked up by the camera. but nothing that is really noticeable from about five or ten feet away. The driver's door is a bit hard to shut. this is not uncommon as the driver's door is obviously used much more than the passenger side. As one can see in the many photos of the underside this Corvette is solid overall. There is no evidence of corrosion or rust around the "birdcage" or a-pillars; there appears to be a small repair on the driver's side around the "keyhole" area. We have included a specific picture of this area in photos below. The factory original rally wheels are in good condition with a nice finish and still retain the correct original 4-clip beauty rings. not the cheap replacements you often see. The tires are less than a year old and have almost full tread left; they are sized 225/70/15.

Window Date Codes

Please note that the side glass and rear window on this Corvette are date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of March 3. 1977 (H03). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The Brown leather interior of the Corvette is in terrific condition. The original seat covers look great with no excessive wear. seat splits or rips. Please note that these appear to be the original seats. not some cheap aftermarket replacements. The carpet is in excellent condition with no stains or holes and appears to be recently installed. This included the rear carpet. which is often neglected. The console and dash are in great condition with no fading or sun damage and just one small crack on the right speaker grill. The original door panels are in nice shape overall with no splits; there is one small blemish on the tip of the arm rest on the driver's door panel. which is visible in the photos. The door pulls are solid and intact. This car has no aroma of cigarettes whatsoever. The original AM/FM radio is still in this Corvette and works well; please note that this is the factory optional stereo radio. Corvette interiors are not known to wear well and the excellent condition of this mostly original interior is a huge testament to the meticulous care this car has received throughout its life.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in very good mechanical condition. It is a nice driver that feels good on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph and then braking to stoplight. Please note that there are no strange noises. vibrations. and the car performs quite well overall. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast. It starts right away every time. idles well. and runs well. The transmission smoothly well throughout the power band. The brakes do not pull to one side or the other and they were just completely overhauled including new pads. calipers. and brake hoses both front and back. This corvette still retains its factory catalytic converter which is another testament to the originality of this fine example. Also. the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed as one can see in the photos; even the original ignition shielding is still in place. The horn works as do all the interior and exterior lights. all gauges (with the obvious exception of the clock and the tach is jumpy). wipers. power windows. and blower for the heater and a/c on all speeds. There is a very slight tick of an exhaust leak on the right side. which is common near the heat riser. The a/c does not work on this car. but the system looks like it was recently serviced with a new compressor so it may just need to be recharged. Luckily. the a/c system has been converted to the more modern 134a style refrigerant so any future service will be much less expensive and easier to complete. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car. especially with the T-tops out on a beautiful day.

Overall Condition

Overall. this 1977 Corvette is in great driver condition. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing. especially with a low mileage car like this. The originality. the rare and desirable color combination. and the great extent to which the numbers match make this car especially important and hard to duplicate. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased drastically over the past several years. They are secure and wise investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
