In the early 60's. American Motors realized that to continue as a viable company. they had to shed the "economy car" image and appeal to a more youthful. performance-oriented market.  The first venture into this market was the Javelin. built between 1967 and 1974 in two generations. The next. more radical version by Head Designer Dick Teague and his team. was the AMX. Although Teague was known for economizing by developing several vehicles from common stampings. it was too little. too late for the company. Even a partnership with French automaker Renault and the introduction of all-wheel-drive cars couldn't save AMC. In 1987. Chrysler Corporation purchased AMC and the story of the last independent automaker came to an end.

The AMX name originates from the "American Motors eXperimental" code used on a concept vehicle and then on two prototypes shown on the company's "Project IV" automobile show tour in 1966. The AMX was the only mass-produced. domestic two-seater to share the market with Chevrolet's Corvette since the 1957 Thunderbird. The AMX was not only sporty and attractive. but it introduced many industry firsts. including safer windshields. injection molded dashboards. and an innovative fiberglass safety padding. a "plastic" on the inside of the windshield posts.

The American Society of Automotive Engineers named the AMX as the "Best Engineered Car of the Year" in 1969 and 1970. The two-seat AMX was meant for a small. well-defined market niche. and it pulled young people into AMC dealer showrooms in never before seen numbers. Today. the 1968-1970 AMX is a highly sought after muscle car.

Clean. straight body was last refinished in 1997. Originally Turbo Silver. now painted GM  Blue Metallic. Both paint and body are in very good condition. Although the paint is 17 years old. it still maintains an even quality and displays a nice gloss. Body has been exposed to very little sunlight. and almost no inclement weather over time. There are three tiny bubbles on the bottom of the passenger side quarter. and four or five tiny bubbles on the very bottom of the driver side quarter. That's it on the body. These tiny bubbles are from some body putty applied to stone chips 17 years ago. The inner quarters are spotless. Photos are in the Photobucket file showing these minor flaws. Single sport mirror. NOS from the '70's. Cragar five spoke polished wheels. Hoosier Quick Time Pro 27x11. 50x15 rear tires. P205/75R14 radial tires on the front. Chrome. stainless. and bright work are original and in very good condition. Glass is also in very good condition. AMC double humped hood with scoop molded in.

Factory Charcoal standard ventilated bucket seat interior. Seats. cushions. and covers are in very good condition. Sun Super Tach. Sun water temperature. amps. and oil pressure gauges. Manual steering. power drum brakes with new master and wheel cylinders. and lines. The owner has set this car up to hook hard and straight. Due to the short wheel base. there is no need for additional suspension add-ons. such as frame ties.

A fine example of AMX history. This beauty is a real vintage hot rod. not a clone. as you see being built and sold across the country. The car is built right. The car is fast. The car is also loud. This is an absolute people magnet at any car show or car cruise.

NOTE: Due to long term storage. valve springs can lose tension and integrity. A new set of valve springs is included with the car. If you intend to run the car aggressively or race the AMX. it is recommended that you install the new valve springs.
