1966 Hertz Rent-A-Racer  “tribute”

What it is …. and what it is NOT:

First let me start by saying this is not a genuine Shelby enhanced car. Naturally if it were. the price would be far outside the “guilt free enjoyment zone”. This is a tribute to the Shelby GT350H. aka Hertz Rent-A-Racer. It is not an exact clone. but rather a car built to pay tribute to that iconic car of 48 years ago.

The original door trim tag documents the car to have been originally built as a “C”-code 289 V8 car that came with Pony interior.

 

History

The former owner and builder of this car indicated he has put less  than 500 miles on it since its completion. It has been part of his small private collection since its completion and has never suffered abuse of any kind. It looks and performs like a recent restoration although it was actually completed close to 10 years ago.

It is interesting to note that this same owner is a former owner of the real deal Hertz Rent-A-Racer. Having owed an original one decades ago. he set out to re-create that blast from the past. However. the goal with this car was NOT to make an exact clone. rather more of a tribute that would ALSO incorporate some very cool 1966 factory Mustang options that were left off the Shelby enhanced cars. Most notably would be the GT rear exhaust treatment and every ones favorite the iconic Pony Interior. Also there is the absence of hood pins and the use of the factory “Rally Pack” as opposed to the Shelby dash mounted tach and a few other more minor details. A few left over original SHELBY parts were used to build this car (front swat bar and gas cap).

Body

 

The body panels are laser straight. The fiberglass Shelby style hood is the better quality one with the metal bracing underneath.

I am told by the former owner that the lower quarter panels were replaced on an otherwise original sheet metal car and that a portion of the drivers side rocker was replaced to correct damage from a floor jack. When I had it on the lift I noted that the floors appeared to be original and solid.

 

Paint

Wow …. simply put it's stunning.   It has that deep wet look and extreme slick finish. Yea. this was an expensive paint job.  

 

Mechanical /  less than 500 miles on resto

The current motor is a 302 out of a 1968 Mustang.  According to the former owner the motor has less than 500 miles on it. The motor has a mild cam. Holley 4-bbl double pumper carb with electric chock setting atop a Edelbrock intake. It has Hedman hedder shorties hooked to a 2. 5 inch aluminized dual system running through Flow Master 40's terminating with factory style GT extensions & tips through the rear body panel.

The tranny and rear end appear to be the original C4 automatic and 8” rear end.

The front SUSPENSION has been completely rebuilt and KONI shocks where installed at all 4 corners.

The tires are 205/60R15” BFGoodrich TA radials with better than 90% tread mounted on reproduction 15” Shelby style wheels.

The radiator is the larger one that will support the addition of Air Conditioning.

 

OPTIONAL Disc Brakes  &  Power Steering

The Disc brakes on front appear to be the OEM vintage correct 4-piston brakes that would be correct for a 1966 Mustang. The rear brakes are drum. The car also has Power Steering.

 

Mechanical Performance

The car runs great and sounds fantastic doing it. The brakes stop with confidence and the car steers effortlessly with the Power Steering. All the gauges are working as does the original radio.

 

Cosmetic Condition

Although restored approximately 10 years ago it shows very little evidence of use. There is zero fatigue in the interior and the paint while not concurs perfect. it is non-the-less outstanding and would be considered “show quality” by the most critical paint expert. The engine bay remains super clean and show ready. This car has been fussed over and protected by a serious car guy …. it is the kind you dream of finding. Seasoned car folks will instantly recognize that this is a very special car.
