Up for bid is my 1969 long wheel base 912 Coupe with matching number engine and original 5-spd transmission in Bahama Yellow. In my just over a year of ownership I've spent 27. 00 over the 18K I paid for it last fall. The car came to me in a rally inspired set up.   It had the RS type front bumper I left on for downforce and drivability. It was lifted. ad two sets of fog lights( non vintage). a poor excuse of a ducktail engine lid and undisclosed rust on both doors and a little on the right A-pillar and a leaky windshield seal. As well it had a leaking RMS and excess play in the crankshaft and worn shifter bushings. The engine had Webers and the engine had been out of the car before but the case had never been separated hence rebuilt. The throttles due to the solex linkage never being hooked up properly only opened 60%. I first had Autometrics Motorsports sort the shifter. Take care of the throttle issue. une the carbs. nstall new Dunlops. ew Boge shocks. ower it to stock height and 4 corner balance it and put a new Bursch exhaust on it. They also sorted the heater boxes so they would really work. They removed the ducktail and installed the original engine lid. We removed the fog light mounted through the front lid and plugged the holes. I found a set of vintage Cibie Tango lights for 350. 00 on E-Bay and had those mounted on the hard to find horn grill light mounts. The car then went to Star Motors and they pulled the windshield and set about working on the rusty door lowers and the A-pillar. The doors were deemed repairable but the body man thought if a set of rust free doors could be found it would be worth the money to find. I did find a pair for of truly no rust doors for 1400. 00 and had them shipped down. The 4 holes in the front lid from the rally light mounting were welded up. Also a hole where an old style alarm key had been installed on the engine lid was welded up. The a-pillar rust was welded up. a new seal from Stoddard was put on with the original windshield. The dash is original and has two cracks but after speaking to both authorities in California that specialize in the dashes they said if you can live with the cracks leave it alone and I did. At this point so much had been done that although the past owners paint still looked good the body shop thought it best to prep the whole car and give it a very well done coat of urethane and clear coat using the paint code form the last owners shops paint job. This is the original color of the car and the second repaint over the original. It is not concours but it's a nice right under the eye paint work. I left the interior alone because it is all original except for the sun-visors. The side mirrors are original but the replacement passenger door must have been from a right hand drive car so the mirror now mirrors the drivers side. It was useless in it's proper position on the old door anyway for lane changes. I was driving it regularly to this point and was adding oil to the motor about a quart every 500-600 miles due to the leak.
In June we were headed to a vintage motoring festival in N. C. and 40 miles out of Charleston and right after an oil change. alve timing. nd generator belt change the generator pulley back half split. I nursed it to the next rest area but it had overheated by then and an intake valve got stuck. The tow on a flat bed damaged the front pan after hooking to the tow hook as well. So the motor was removed for a rebuild by Autometrics it was just completed with a 1720cc big bore kit and has a little over 100 miles on it. The car went back to Star Motor and they replaced the front pan. ront suspension pan and tow hook and ziebarted those areas. So there is no known rust except for a 50 cent size area of surface rust on the pan near the driver footwell. The pan and weld points show no signs of any accidents ever. The body is the same no signs of any damage ever. The chrome is all original and in great shape. The engine has more torque now than in it's original form and the Webers were re-jetted for the displacement increase. I have and got when I bought it the original steering wheel. US headlights. 912 oil gauge ( it has a 911 one). front bumper and bumperettes more mics. parts including the original A/C compressor as the car came equipped with it when new. I also have the original maintenance book verifying the car and engine match and the owners book and tags for the radio. The radio still works ! The interior is a time capsule and is in very good shape so it was left alone.
What the car does need : The fuchs could stand to be properly redone by polish and paint. The windshield washer is inoperative and the dash has the two cracks. There is a crack in the left front turn signal lense. There is also a missing half of the plastic cover that goes over the seat belt lock on the drivers side. Of course you could do more to make it a perfect concours car but it needs nothing to be driven RELIABLY and enjoyed now and for years to come. The engine rebuild alone was 11. 00. 00 . The rest of the money I've spent went to the body shop and for parts.
I've told people before you can go and bid and or buy these cars still in the teens and twenties but you will get what I first got. A car that will need a motor rebuilt or have rust and prior damage or a myriad of things you don't know about and won't be told need doing. I've pretty much done all that to this car. Hagerty's September guide now shows a condition 3 car with a 5-spd to be valued at 32. 40. 00. A condition 2 is at 42. 00. 00. This is from what these cars are bringing on the market right now. I have 45. 00 invested and am willing to lose 20 percent and then some more to sell this car. I am however not giving it away. My reserve is set to reflect that. I have a 100 percent record on E-Bay. I've been a Porsche Club of America member since 2006 and was the President of our Palmetto region in 2010. I'd like to see this car go to someone who can appreciate it and enjoy it. To my knowledge I am the 5th owner and the mileage is original. My loss can be your gain. This is a sale though and should you bid and make reserve you are buying a car ! a 1000. 00 deposit will be due within 24 hours via Paypal and the balance due within 7 days. I'll work with any shipper to get the car and the extra parts to them. I used Reliable Transport when I got it and would highly recommend them again. Vehicle is for sale locally so I keep the option to unlist if it sells before reserve is met.
Call or message with any questions or if you need more photos. I have nothing to hide with this sale.   My cell is 843-276-2367.
