Snippets: Roald Dahl. Tata of India. The Last Debutantes. Delivered to S. D Hollingsworth who was in the Insurance business with the firms of “Haldin & Philips Ltd”. “B. C. I. Ltd” & “Hollingsworth & Hollingsworth”. The next owner was Norman William Sayer of Bennett & Sayer specialists in ironmongery. brickmaking and owners of lime works & quarries. By 1949 GUK50 was with Robert “Ginger” Henderson of Little Missenden who was not only a friend of Roald Dahl but was the inspiration for the character Gordon Hawes in the novel “Fifty Thousand Frogskins”. The next couple of owners were members of the RAF and then GUK50 went into politics with Eric R. Lubbock – 4th Baron Avebury who was Liberal MP (1962/70); prior to politics E. Lubbock worked for Rolls-Royce as their production manager (1951/6). A few years later GUK50 was acquired by a member of the TATA family – Beramji S. Saklatvala - his father Shapurji Saklatvala was Labour MP for Battersea North during the 1920s and was the third Indian Member of the British Parliament. the others being Dadabhai Naoroji (Lib) & Mancherjee Bhownagree (Cons). After only a few years GUK50 was with the twins Michael & John Elles-Hill who in 1958 where a regular feature on the London scene. In 1958. the year of the Last Debutantes Ball at Buckingham Palace they drove down The Mall in GUK50 whilst holding a placard saying “Goodbye Dear Debs”! The twins & their car were featured in various newspapers when they joined a procession of charity cyclists including: Gloria Kindersley (romantically linked with Lord Milford Haven) Lord V. Thynne (son of the 6th & brother of the 7th Marquess of Bath). Greville Howard (cousin of the Earl of Suffolk). Deidre Hamilton-Hill who later became the 1st wife of Corin Redgrave. Between 1960 & 1998 GUK50 was in America with Meerily & Robert Dunlap before returning to the UK in 1998.
