The De Tomaso Mangusta was produced between 1967 and 1971. Some
401 Mangustas' were manufactured. approximately 150 for the
European market and the remainder for the North American market.
One car was built with a Chevrolet engine for General Motors Vice
President. Bill Mitchell. There are reported to be approximately
250 of the 401 cars left in existence according to the registers
available. The name 'Mangusta' is Italian for mongoose. an animal
that can kill cobras. It was rumoured that the car was so named
because De Tomaso had some talks with Carroll Shelby to replace the
Shelby Cobra. although no deal was signed as Shelby became involved
in the Ford GT40 racing program. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro the
De Tomaso Mangusta is easily recognised by its gullwing doors over
the engine and luggage compartment. Disc brakes were standard on
all four wheels coupled with independent suspension. rack and
pinion steering and air conditioning. The Mangusta was replaced by
the much cheaper-to-build De Tomaso Pantera in 1971 and
manufactured for 21 years.

This exquisitely handsome De Tomaso was registered in the U. S. on
22nd May. 1969 and has been lovingly cared for to a very high
standard. The red coachwork is in splendid order. as is the black
leather interior. Inside the cockpit. there is a delightful period
feel to the instrumentation layout and switches. Upon starting the
4949cc. V8 engine. it is obviously apparent this car is special.
Not only does the engine sound superb. the performance on our 'all
too gentle' test drive. was impressive. Mated to a five-speed ZF
gearbox. this is a car with outstanding styling and one you will
never get bored of driving. Believed to be a two owner vehicle in
the U. S. and supplied with the necessary importation documents and
registered on UK number plates. with a V5 document. together with a
very comprehensive log of everything the original owner ever had
done to the car. The unique styling of these supercars can only be
admired. the gullwing engine covers a classic example of Italian
design at its best. This De Tomaso Mangusta is in superb condition
and represents an opportunity to own one of the finest examples
available today.
