The 280 SL is the most refined of the 200 series of Mercedes Benz. dating back to the mid 50's with the 300SL Gullwing Coupe. The 280 SL series is the called "Pagoda" due to roof lines of the removable hardtop which are suggestive of a  Chinese Pagoda.

The type W 113 went into production in 1963 with the 230 SL as the successor to the 190 SL. At the time it was a huge upgrade. combining stunning looks with reliability and performance. which became the signature of German production quality. It is rumored that some Formula 1 drivers of the time thought of it as one of the best handling cars and the Pagoda had a historic and notorious list of celebrity owners including King Hussein. John Lennon. Audrey Hepburn. Sophia Loren. Juan Manuel Fangio. and Stirling Moss.

Relative to the 190 SL. the 280 Pagodas had a more powerful 6 cylinder engine which was also more reliable thanks to its mechanical fuel injection system. With the 250 SL and later models it's features were further upgraded with items such as disc brakes all around. power steering. 4-speed Automatic transmission. power assisted brakes. air conditioning. AM and FM radios.

It's production ceased in 1971 with the 280 SL.

Of the 23. 85 units built 18. 81 were exported. of which 12. 24 went to the USA. In 1970. only 7935 cars were made. and only a little more than half were shipped to the US.

This offering is for a meticulously restored and gingerly maintained 1970. 280SL Pagoda. manufactured in February 1970. and completely restored over 5 years. Her speedometer reads only 2816 miles. but in reality the restoration took place approximately 4000 miles ago.
