SELLER REMARKS

The one-year-only 1958 Chevrolet is seeing some big gains in the market. even while the '55-57 models are cooling off. Perhaps it's the search for something unique. or maybe it's just because cars like this Impala hardtop are simply gorgeous cars.

Following a frame-on restoration that was reportedly completed in 2013. this Tuxedo Black hardtop has a lot of presence. Big like a Cadillac and totally shedding any resemblance to the far-more-common '57s. this awesome Impala looks like it should cost twice as much as it does. The black paint has a deep. rich gloss that looks appropriate on the vintage bodywork. not with a hard shine but rather a nice gloss that reflects well. Underneath. the steel bodywork is straight and while good enough would have been good enough if they used the original code 936 Snowcrest White. but using black means they had to go the extra mile. The car is a visual delight; too. with awesome details everywhere you look: check out the vent above the rear window and the trim that wraps around the triple taillights. which made their debut this year. The '58s adopted a lot of chrome in the redesign. too. and the cost to restore all that stuff would put at least one kid through college and all the stainless was buffed to match.

Tri-tone interiors were the Imp's calling card. and the code 836 Gray. Black. and Turquoise is what this car carried originally. Fortunately. it works really well with the Tuxedo Black bodywork and is a rather unusual combination that will stand out when all the cars with red interiors show up. Most of the interior appears to be new. including the carpets. seat covers. dash pad. and wonderfully bright door panels. The dashboard is thoroughly modern. a big step forward compared to the '57s and the jet-age inspired steering wheel is beautifully finished in turquoise and gray with lots of chrome details. The gauges are nicely rendered with crisp numbers on black backgrounds and the original AM radio still lives in the dash. Even the back seat offers first-class accommodations with matching seat overs and a very trick center armrest that rises out of the lower cushion. and there's plenty of room even for adults. The trunk is. of course. immense and includes a new reproduction mat and a full-sized spare tires.

Power comes from a period-correct 283 cubic inch V8 that's rebuilt and dressed up to look right in the big Imp's engine bay. There's a correct air cleaner up top. proper Chevrolet script valve covers. and lots of Chevy Orange paint to jump out at you against the black engine bay. A correct generator still makes the juice and with a 4-barrel carburetor. it's responsive and easy to drive. Remarkably. it's linked to a 3-speed manual transmission. a very rare choice on the top-of-the-line Impala and probably a lot more fun than the usual PowerGlide 2-speed automatic that so many of these cars used. Raw cast iron ram's horn exhaust manifolds are a little crusty but sound great through a reproduction single exhaust system that has a nice V8 burble. The underside is pretty original. but thanks to a layer of undercoating it looks nicely preserved and the original rear end still lives out back. Standard steel wheels with full wheel covers are dressed with appropriate 7. 50-14 wide whites that sparkle against the black paint.

A very pretty car that's suddenly the belle of the ball. '58 Impalas represent a lot of firsts for Chevrolet. and they aren't going to get any more affordable in the future. Call today!
