Snippets – The McGowans.
James McGowan took delivery of GTZ65 at Nr 6 Cambridge Gate. Regent's Park. London. designed by John Nash & named after Prince Adolphus. Duke of Cambridge. Viceroy of Hanover. James's wife Harriett McIlwraith was the only child of Sir Thomas McIlwraith Kt1882 (1835/1900) & his 2nd wife Harriette Ann nee Mosman (1853/1929). Sir Thomas was Premier of Queensland. Australia 3 times 1879/83. 1888 & 1893. he returned to England in 1895 but did not resign from the Queensland cabinet until 1897! In 1926. upon her grandson Brian McIlwraith McGowan's 21st birthday Lady Harriette bequeathed him her home “Tower Cottage”. Winchelsea which she had purchased from Ellen Terry (1847/1928) the leading Shakespeare actress of the time. During WWII Tower Cottage had a lean-to structure which house the Gun Emplacement & in 1952 Brian sold Tower Cottage to Miss. M. M Henson of Bickleigh Castle in Tiverton the history of which can be traced back to the 1400s.
