The ’58 Corvette was the epitome of flash from an era when flash was king! All new that year with a wider and longer body; 9. 2 inches in added length and 2. 3 inches in added width. which meant more needed interior room. The new design featured a completely new dash layout placing every dial (except the clock) right in front of the driver. updated door panels and seats. The exterior featured bumpers that were no longer attached to the body but to the frame. quad headlights and covered taillights. But the most striking design change was on the hood. which featured louvers and on the trunk. which featured dual chrome truck spears. The whole package was striking. to say the least and considered by some to be over the top! But that was the fabulous 50’s! In hind sight. this is one of the most coveted and collectible of all the first generation Corvettes.

This very rare Big Brake Fuelie is one of only 144 built in ’58! It was formally owned by prominent Corvette vintage racer and collector Rich Mason since ’79. It underwent a complete. no expense spared restoration in ’05 and features a correct. fuel injected engine. Some of the features that really set this Fuelie apart from the rest are of course RPO 684 Big Brake option. RPO 685 4-spd. transmission. RPO 678 Posi-traction rear end. RPO 426 Power Windows and the ULTRA RARE Halibrand knock-off wheels and bullet-style competition headlight covers!

The car has received an N. C. R. S. Top Flight (98. 4). Performance Verification Award and the coveted Duntov Award (99. 0)! This is certainly not a Corvette that comes to market regularly. so don’t miss an opportunity to own what is surely one of the nicest examples in existence!

On the track. thanks to the efforts of Jim Jeffords and his "Purple People Eater. the 1958 Corvette again won the SCCA's B-Production crown in 1958. Jim Rathmann and Dick Doane took the GT class at Sebring that year. and veteran Ak Miller won the sports-car class at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb with a time of 15 minutes. 23. 7 seconds. None of these triumphs were mentioned in Corvette advertising. however. as Chevrolet was officially shying away from hawking performance in the wake of the Automobile Manufacturers Association "anti-racing" edict of the previous year. The Corvette's ad copy now emphasized things like a "silken cyclone of a V-8" and a "beautifully compact body" with "a chassis that clings to the road like a stalking panther. "

Another first for the '58 Corvette. it turned a profit for the first time. Model-year production was well above 1957's record level. totaling 9. 68 units. As a result. the 'Vette was one of the few domestic models to score increased sales in that recession-wracked season.
