Those of you who have been paying attention know that these days. wagons are HOT! Especially a rare cool classic Mopar like this. Great cruiser. perfectly enjoyable as it is. Load up the family and head to Walley World. Or make it a into a real show car with little effort. Just imagine how sweet it would be to hitch your Airstream Bambi to this wagon and go see our great country in style and comfort. Or build a Fast N' Loud style hotrod (look what they did to that Chevy Kingswood!). Whatever you decide to do with it. you are going to LOVE riding in this car. Gets lots of attention so if you don't like talking to strangers about your car. this may be too much car for you.
You are looking an incredible rust free California survivor that can be enjoyed as it is. I recently took a 800 mile road trip in it and enjoyed every minute of it. Also achieved 13. 8 measured MPG doing 65-70 MPH. The seats are fit for a King and are the most comfortable car seat you will ever sit in. The pillowy leather just makes you feel like you are sitting in a cloud. Couple that with a 5320 pound car (it was weighed in 1978 by the CA Division of Measurement standards. have receipt) that has a ride that no new car could ever duplicate. and you have one sweet cruiser here.
This wagon is powered by the original 440 4 barrel mated to a rebuilt 727 transmission. This car is fully loaded with power windows. cruise control. tilt/telescope steering. a/c. dual power seats. third row seat. dual remote mirrors. and cornering lamps. There is also chrome rear grab rails. and a gorgeous original luggage rack with wood trim looking like new.
Some of you are scratching your heads right now thinking "What the heck is that? They never made an Imperial wagon". and you would be right. This car started life as a highly optioned 1974 Chrysler Town & Country wagon that was lovingly converted in the seventies to Imperial LeBaron specs by Jack. its loving owner for 36 years. He got a sweet deal back then as it was a few years old and off lease. plus this was not the kind of car that was selling well during the days of oil embargos and gas rationing. Being in the auto recycling business. Jacked sourced all the parts for his project and his dream came to life. He put on the Imperial front end with retractable headlight doors. tufted leather seats. plush carpet. and LeBaron dashboard. From my research. this may be one of only four wagons that has the Imperial front end treatment. and the only one with the Imperial LeBaron leather interior. Jack was getting on in years and decided to sell his business and downsize his car collection. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to buy the car from this highly reluctant owner.
This rare car has true provenance. Jack took great care of his baby and kept a service file. I just finished looking through and organizing all the receipts and there are at least 150 of them in there spanning the life of the car. The service file tells a great story of a guy who spared no expense to keep his car in tip top working order. They also show the progression of mileage over the years. which I have no reservations stating are original. The odometer reads 38. 60 and it has been around once. so actual mileage is 138. 60. He also gave me the owner's manual. factory chassis manual and body service manuals. which are included. Also included is a roll of original Di-Noc woodgrain that he claims is enough to do two cars with.
BODY: How many rust free 40 year old original cars are you finding. let alone one this rare and cool? Absolutely incredible original body with no rust whatsoever. ever. Floors are rock solid and still have factory undercoat. The Chrysler has a fantastic patina which I did my best not to disturb while cleaning. If you would prefer a high speed buff and touch up done. this can be done before delivery for a couple of hundred bucks. I know one of the best detailers around. Paint has had spot repairs over the years. The roof looks to have been recently painted and looks very nice. Other parts of the body have scratches. chips. dings. weak clearcoat as pictured. There is a small spot on the left fender just above the woodgrain where I removed what I thought was a little overspray. Turns out there was a small ding spot repair there and I exposed a little primer. The clearcoat on the hood is a little faded and worn through in a couple of spots. Every piece of trim is on the car and intact. Glass is all good. Has spare. jack and jumper cables onboard.
INTERIOR: The tufted leather seats are in fantastic original condition. leather is soft and supple with no tears. Fronts have been redyed at some point. and show a little wear compared to the rear. To help preserve them for years to come. I recently did a serious deep cleaning and then soaked them in mink oil for 3 days. Plush carpet is like new. Door panels are nice. there is a small cut that was repaired at some point on the right rear. Original headliner has a tear that could be repaired. Dash was originally blue and there are a few spots on the edge where the dye wore off and exposed a little blue. No funny "old car" smells. smells like rich leather.
MECHANICAL: Pump the gas one time with a cold engine and it cranks up every time. New 800cca battery and premium voltage regulator. Has a fairly new Edelbrock 4 barrel. Idles well. lots of smooth power. Complete valve job done less than 15. 00 miles ago. Transmission shifts perfectly and was completely reboult less than 7. 00 miles ago. Car had complete front end rebuild less than a year ago. feels rock solid on the highway at 80+ MPH. Brakes feel sure and solid but rear drums go out of round if you get them too hot. There is a small gasket where the egr tube goes into the left exhaust manifold that is leaking.
ELECTRICAL: All exterior lighting is in working order. even the signal indicators on the fenders. Electric retractable headlight doors work great. Power windows and seats are all working. All gauges work. including the low fuel light. The original electronic clock still works and keeps great time! Tailgate window switch on dash lowers the window but won't raise it. Window works fine both ways with key in tailgate. A/C is all there and compressor is free. According to Jack it has a small leak and he hadn't filled it for a couple of years. Cruise Control works but is best suited to relatively level roads. Has a Pioneer stereo that works fine.
I know many will ask. "Can I drive this car home to _________? That depends on your experience and abilities. Personally. if I had to. I could get in the car now and drive to Florida and I would probably make it without any serious incident. But I have alot of experience with this type of thing. Mechanically. this car seems really solid and should be fine with judicious driving and a watchful eye. The biggest risk is the older Michelin tires. Although they have plenty of thread. they have some dry cracking. The rears have wear on the inside as they were on the front before the front end was rebuilt. I would be happy to arrange for new rubber at your expense if you plan on driving a long way. But please. if you are not comfortable with the idea of (mis)adventure on the road then I would be happy to help arrange shipping.
Clear California title on hand. registration paid until 12-14. Has CA smog equipment on it but is smog exempt for the model year. Which means this is a prime hotrod candidate! Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions. Just send your name and number through ebay and I will call.
