1965 Ford Mustang Coupe

Since it was introduced 4 months before the normal start of the 1965 production year the earliest Mustangs were referred to as the 1964.5 model by enthusiasts. Nevertheless, all 1964.5 cars were given a 1965 standard VIN at the time of production. Production began in March 1964 and serial number 1, (5F08F100001), was sold on April 14th, 1964 at the George Parsons Ford dealership in St. John's Newfoundland, Canada. The official introduction followed on April 17th at the 1964 World's Fair. The gentleman whose name will be forever written in Mustang history was Captain Stanley Tucker. He walked into George Parsons Ford and found an all too eager salesman who sold him the car....3 days before the model officially went on sale. The rest, as they say, is history.

For consignment, a 1964.5 Ford Mustang in a respray of Springtime Yellow fully restored with a binder documenting the restoration. A Palomino interior, wire hubcaps with spinners, and attention to detail on all fronts, this hardtop, with its new jacket is a stunner!

ExteriorA very smooth shiny coat of Springtime Yellow now covers the straight, well gapped steel panels. All brite work, and chrome appears in very nice condition, with all windows are clear and blemish free. The correct 1964.5 hood is on the car and the perfect running horse is surrounded by a rectangular border with 4 distinct mounting bars in the black honeycomb grille below. The well known and loved Mustang cove is here to start it all off and the well known taillights are making their first appearance on the rear. A flip of the trunk reveals a very well-done space covered with plaid striped vinyl in very nice condition. Wire hubcaps with spinner centers are mounted on steel wheels and are wrapped in thin white striped rubber.

InteriorVery much like the exterior in that it was meticulously restored with few stones left unturned. Beautiful Palomino vinyl buckets sit in an ocean of camel colored carpet with camel colored Mustang embroidered floor mats. Dash appears like new with Palomino metal topped by Palomino padded vinyl. Within this area of the metal, one can view 2 matching shaped rounded rectangles in black, framed by chrome, that houses the Mustang gauges on the driver's side, and the glovebox on the passenger, an original AM radio sits in the center. Fronting the dash is a pristine Mustang steering wheel with a plastic Palomino hoop on the outside and a Rallye Pack tachometer and clock on the column. The remaining knobs and levers are all very nicely restored. Lest we forget the beautifully restored seats, with Palomino vinyl buckets in the front and a matching vinyl bench seat in the rear. A center console runs between the front buckets and is a mix of tan plastic and black and chrome running forward to the dash. A 4-speed shifter pokes from this console and there is a storage compartment in the console just below the dash. A tight off white headliner is above and is in superb condition.

DrivetrainA D-code 289ci 4V V8 sits in the middle of a beautifully restored engine bay. Correct gold paint has been applied to the valve covers as well as the air cleaner. Another sign of this car's early production heritage is the generator in place of the alternator and different air vent louvers in the radiator support to allow cooling to the unit. Attached to this mill is a 4-speed manual transmission and on the back is a Ford 8" axle with a 3.00 conventional gearset.

Undercarriage As with the topside the restoration is clean underneath as well. 4-wheel drum brakes are noted as well as independent coil springs for the front suspension and leaf springs for the rear. The unibody and floor pans are finished in a satin black and have no signs of rust or corrosion.

Drive-AbilityThis car started easily and ran great. It handled our test track like a champ and was a pleasure to drive with good acceleration, smooth shifting, superb handling, and bias free braking. We did note a few issues on our drive, we found the radio to be non functioning along with the clock and turn signals.

Here we have a meticulously restored early Mustang. A great color combination car that starts right up, and runs smoothly, this is the car that should grace your garage. Leave the kids at home in front of the TV, grab the Missus, and enjoy the sound of kid silence as the world whips by, and you have nothing but great conversation, and a smile on your face.
