With extortionate winter premiums for these incredibly elegant and capable vehicles firmly behind us as spring approaches. now is perhaps the time to search out a gem of a Range Rover Classic.
Our particular vehicle was comprehensively refurbished in February 1999 where it was changed from an unremarkable and somewhat utilitarian beige. to the striking. updated Rioja Red metallic you see it in today.
The transition was undertaken so comprehensively that close to ten thousand pounds was spent and together with a total strip and repaint. the following work was also completed:
* New upper tailgate fitted
* New lower tailgate fitted
* Two new front wings fitted
* £1000 Colour Coded "Brooklands" style Bodykit fitted
* New window channels and seals fitted
* New stainless steel high performance tubular manifolds fitted
*New stainless steel high performance twin pipe exhaust system fitted
*Polybushed suspension
* Harvey-Bailey style Handling Kit fitted
* New factory "Boost" style alloy wheels fitted including spare
The list is almost endless and is detailed in an invoice totalling £9263. 70!!
In addition. this cherished car has original equipment side steps fitted. rear lamp guards and a smart chromed front grille for an added touch of distinctive and individual style.
This extensive work was clearly considerably more than a cosmetic refresh and the car also stands apart as it has the most delightful interior with a correctly trimmed 'no-sag' GRP based headlining upgrade and a costly period-perfect solid wood steering wheel which complements the interior woodwork. The car has original tailored overmats protecting the carpet set which is unworn. The luxurious seating is unmarked. and save for slightly baggy map pockets. looks like new - even the original working stereo is still in situ.
Incredibly. its history can be traced through almost twenty years of consecutive MOT's and its comprehensive history file including classic valuation certificates would put many a cosseted classic car to shame.
Mechanically in very good order. although sometimes a little tappety from cold. this Range Rover has very recently had its rear discs and pads replaced and just this week has had upgraded drilled and grooved front discs. pads and new backplates fitted. A recent service provided a new coil. eight new NGK sparkplugs. a new distributor cap and rotor arm and with a complete matching set of Avon Ranger tyres. an MOT until November 2012 and road fund licence until July. this stunning Range Rover Classic is ready to enjoy immediately.
Although there are no obvious signs of the devastating electrolytic corrosion normally associated with Range Rovers of this vintage. there are inevitably a few small marks here and there as it was painted twelve or thirteen years ago. not just last week. However. these are very minor and are really confined to to a couple of small marks on the rear edge of the bonnet and the odd blemish which is to be expected. All door tops and bottoms and panel edges are lovely even though the vulnerable inner rear wheelarches have been replaced and finished in a more utilitarian black rather than body colour.
Extensively waxoyled throughout and structurally very strong. the classic Range Rover drives very sharply indeed with the benefit of polybushed suspension and the fitment of a handling kit which reduces pitch and roll considerably. Its simple yet strong 3. 5 litre alloy V8 is uncomplicated by modern standards and this Classic has no sunroof to leak. and no complex and troublesome air suspension to cause expensive headaches. Far more comfortable and less expensive than any Defender of a similar age and more timelessly elegant than a Discovery. these Range Rover Classics are still a formidable off-roader as well as being a most capable road car and being fitted with a full towbar and electrics. the weekend trips to the tip will be a stylish doddle.
With subtly updated aesthetics. this particular car brings favourable comments from admiring enthusiasts. and yet despite its incredibly comprehensive history. it remains a relative bargain when compared to some of the Classics advertised today. plus it will only continue to rise in value.

This is the write up from when it was purchased last year. Its pretty much the same apart from its just had leather interior fitted (all electrics work just need wiring up (velour seats also included in sale)) And has a modern CD Player. Have also noticed it will sometimes idle at around 500 rpm. A new air flow meter at £35 would rectify this but it really doesn't bother me.Also published at eBay.co.uk
