1970 Austin Cambridge A60 Half-Ton van on column. Austin launched its Cambridge range in 1954 and it progressed through four generations (A40, A50, A55 and A60) before production finally ended in 1971. Although the vast majority were four-door saloons, from 1956 until 1971 a van derivative was also offered which Austin simply referred to as a Half-Ton Van. Initially available with a 50bhp 1.5-litre B-Series engine, this was upgraded in 1961 to a 61bhp 1.6-litre unit which had first been used in the sporty MGA Roadster. Allied to a four-speed floor change gearbox, this gave the van spritely performance for its day with a top speed of over 70mph and 30mpg economy.
This A60 van was originally registered on 21st April 1971 being the last year these vans were produced. Whilst it has been restored, it clearly has been a well looked after vehicle. The whole concept of purchasing a light commercial for private classic motoring combined with its advertising potential is one we have enjoyed for many years and proved to be an enormous success. Without doubt the most economical and successful form of advertising known to man! Without doubt the most popular 1/2 ton van of its era with many thousands bought to work hard and consequently worked to death. With this in mind, examples like this are now difficult to acquire.To see an Austin Cambridge on the road is rare but to see a van is an exceptionally rare sight. Finished in grey with a red bench seat, this Austin has a large history folder, with a workshop manual, handbook, old MOTs and a stack of invoices. UK mainland delivery included.
