There is another one of these for sale on ebay at the moment. but finished and with a V8 for £13. 5k.  It could be the only other one in the UK:http://www. ebay. co. uk/itm/1966-MERCURY-COMET-FORD-289-V8-SBF-2-DOOR-IN-RED-STACKED-HEADLIGHTS-RARE-/121192972831?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item1c37aa021f
I would consider splitting the engine and gearbox for anyone who wanted to finish it with a V8.
UPDATE:Some additional info based on questions:1. Fuel filler area has been modified. Flange that would be behind the hinged flap has been removed so fuel filler cap is always on display - same as period nascars.  I have the flap which can be bolted back on but something will need to be added to create a stop when it is closed2. Rear light lenses are present and in good condition3. Trim for front and rear lights is aluminium and is tarnished and in some areas slightly pitted.  I was going to paint silver4. Interior trim parts are present.  Door cards/handles etc are usable but a little untidy5. It has lap belts in the rear6. Boot lock is removed. race style pins are fitted7. Bonnet latch is removed but I still have it I think.  Pins are fitted8. Paint has not yet been sanded or polished9. Seals etc plus some interior trim parts. door handles and other parts can be bought new in the states from MAC's. Crafters and Carpenters plus Ebay10. It is pillarless****
Up for sale is my unfinished project. this is the last project I attempt.  I just don't have the time to finish it. It is a 1966 Mercury Comet Caliente 2 door. quite unusual in the UK and with that great stacked headlight. 2 door shape. It was a fresh import when I bought it and I have the customs paperwork to allow registration once it has an MOT.
Suspension/Brakes:I rebuilt the drum brakes with new wheel cylinders and master cylinder plus 1 new drumThe front suspension was rebuilt with all new parts and the coils cut down for loweringNew shocks all roundLowering blocks on the rearRear axle is a ford 8"Everything cleaned and painted
Fuel System:The fuel tank has been removed. cleaned. sealed and the outside stripped and painted.  It has been re-fitted with a new sender. new fuel pump and filter king/regulator.
Body:All unwanted trim holes welded up. Underside cleaned and painted white.  Some of this on one side may need doing again as there has been a minor reaction.  I was saving this as a job for once it was on the road. Inner arches in underseal. I bare metalled the outside and repaired some minor rust around the lower rear window corners. It has been bare metalled. zinc primed and painted in 2 pack paint. 2 tone red and white to resemble the Nascars racing in the mid to late 60'sEngine bay has been treated the same. Doors and front end metalwork have been bare metalled and zinc primed but not primed and painted.  I have paint left. All useful trim is removed and labelled. New seals etc will be required. I have fitted a full new set of locks and keys including the ignition. I have removed the fuel filler cap but still have it.  I was going with a nascar look so have a brand new alloy lemans style fuel filler cap to fit. Front bumper is good with a couple of small patches of surface rust where chrome has gone.  The rear bumper is not so good and will need painting or chroming.
Interior:Inside of the boot was cleaned and painted. I sourced a very hard to find replacement dash top which had a couple of small cracks and recovered it in black vinyl myself.  I also tarted up the dash cluster. It has no heater. I have the black vinyl back seats. door cards etc. There is no headlining but I have the wire supports that I took out. I have 2 Jaz black vinyl bucket seats on subframes and brand new harnesses - 4 point red 3" nascar style for the driver and 2" 3 point black with inertia reel for the passenger.
Electrical:New headlights and some new wiring. New starter solenoid. coil and HT leadsThe main item needing work will be the wiring for the rear brake light/indicators.  Reversing lights in the clusters are converted to orange. Engine bay wiring is there but will need some tidying up when it is re-assembed.
Drivetrain:The engine is a 200cu. (3. 3ltr) 6 cylinder fitted with a mallory distributor (new cap). Offenhauser tri-power manifold and 3 x Weber 34 carbs.  2 outer carbs are ICT and middle one is ICH (i. e. with choke).  All have been jetted based on info from US forums.  Engine was running before I stripped it for painting but will need fine tuning before it gets used. It has tubular headers that could do with a clean and paint/wrap.  New gasket will be needed. I built a brand new split exhaust system with a silencer per side and exiting just in front of the rear wheels.  It sounds great. It was a column shift auto when I got it but I have sold the box and got the all of the main parts to make it a 3 speed manual - gearbox. bellhousing. brand new clutch. new driveshaft yoke. clutch pedal. hydraulic slave and master cylinders.  The slave cylinder will need mounting on the bellhousing and pipework made up. Engine and box both stripped. cleaned and painted with epoxy primer and enamel.  The sump still needs painting and I have a chrome valve cover to go on.  There is a small oil leak from the sump so a new gasket when painting the sump would be a good idea.
Cooling:I have a brand new big alloy radiator to fit but no fan or plumbing.
Other info:This is basically the same as a Ford Fairlane underneath so there is no trouble sourcing parts apart for some of the trim.  The only bits I don't have are the straight bits for the grill. The windscreen has a chip on the drivers side.  This may be repairable but may not.  If required a new windscreen can be bought from the USA for approx £300 including shipping and duties. The wheels are modern alloys. 15x8 I think. tyres hold air and have good tread but might not get through an MOT due to sidewall cracking.  I think this needs steels and period tyres anyway. The rear windscreen is out and will need a new seal.
There are probably other new bits that I have forgotten but everything I have goes with it including the engine stand if it is wanted.
I can re-hang large panels if required to assist with the collection. obviously it will have to go on a trailer!
If you have any questions please ask by email.  I wasn't religious about taking photos through the build but do have more and have a short phone video of the engine running. I obviously recommend that you come and have a look if you are interested but please note that I will not be around from Saturday 2nd to Monday 4th November.
