Award Winning '59 Bugeye Sprite Finished in Rare Leaf Green and Green Interior for sale
For your consideration. here is an award winning 1959 Austin Healey Mark 1 Sprite AN5 commonly referred to in North America as the Bugeye Sprite and in the UK as the Frogeye Sprite. It is finished in factory correct Leaf Green with a rare green interior. The car was nearly a rust free example prior to its restoration. nbsp;needing only a minor amount of metal work prior to painting. It is a nice stock Bugeye body and interior that is freshly restored with the proper upgrades to the drivetrain. suspension. nbsp;and brakes to make it a great running and driving British sports car. The first 17 pictures are of the car as it looks today. the last 7 are of the car in various stages of being restored.
I obtained the car as a stalled. abandoned project about 4 years ago. It had had the engine. gearbox. and differential rebuilt according to the shop where it was when I bought it. I have no reason to think it was not properly rebuilt as it starts. runs. and drives flawlessly. I stripped most of the interior and under bonnet items off the car to make it a rolling chassis for painting and carried it to the paint shop. It was painted the proper factory Leaf Green color. base coat/clear coat. I then brought it home. restored the drive train cosmetically. and restored the suspension and brakes. A brand new pair of seats and interior kit were installed. again in the correct factory green color. The carpet is also green. complimenting the interior perfectly. It has a new wiring harness. all electrics were rebuilt or new. gauges all work properly. and all of the lamps are new or restored. The car is equipped with a later BMC 1275cc engine. ribcase transmission. and a 3. 90:1 differential making it much more highway friendly. I also installed rebuilt front disc brake assemblies from a later Spridget which make the car safe with the more powerful drivetrain. I took great pains to keep it all factory stock other than the drivetrain and front brakes. so it cannot be told from a completely stock Sprite Mark I unless you look under the bonnet. Even then it is not readily apparent as the engine looks the same as the less powerful one. The changes all are designed to make it a much better driving car.
I finished it earlier this month and took it to the 2013 Euro Auto Festival at the BMW plant in Greer. South Carolina. a large car show where about 400 European cars were on the show field. The car won First Place of the Austin Healey Sprite class. One show. one first!
I have a complete photographic record of the restoration which will be given to the buyer on a CD. I do not have any history on the car in addition to the pictures.
There is still a bit of work to do to the car. just minor adjustments. really. The door trim inside the driver's door needs to be reglued. the windshield wiper motor needs to be adjusted for parking the blades. the bonnet needs adjustment. and the brakes need a final bleeding. all of which will be completed prior to delivering the car. The car will come with a working convertible top frame. a used top. and a set of used sidecurtains. All are serviceable. but they have not been restored. I would suggest a new top is in order and the frame and sidecurtains should be restored. but will leave that to the buyer. as I intended to keep the car garaged and would only use it on nice days. The pictures show the car with an aftermarket steering wheel which will be replaced with a refinished factory black one before delivery. The wood wheel is available in place of the stock one at an additional cost of $250. The car will be sold with a bill of sale as Georgia does not issue titles for cars this old. The mileage noted is incorrect-- I had the odometer set to zero when the speedometer was professionally rebuilt. I have no idea of the true mileage.
