Checker Marathon Restored w/ all original parts Concours D'elegance Winner for sale

Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.1) based on 526 votes

This car is being relisted as the first purchaser changed his mind without even seeing the car.

This car was purchased brand new on September 16th 1963 by Rabbi Milton Miller from Elizabeth New jersey as his personal vehicle. He owned it until 2001. when it was sold as part of his estate. The next owner restored the car in 2002-03 keeping it in complete original condition with the exception of paint. He switched from the original silver color to Mercedes silver ( similar to the original) & in 2010 he sold it to me.

The engine is a rare continental OHV 16 226 2 barrel Carb (141 Hp version). This was an option only available in 1963-64 with very few sold. Other options are the Borg Warner automatic transmission. power steering. air conditioning & tinted windows. These cars were reknown for their longevity & durability being used as cabs in NYC. Chicago & other large cities & many accumulating 1. 00. 00 miles +.

Besides winning many awards & praise at local car shows. the most exciting thing to happen to me was being invited to the Greenwich. Ct. Concours D' Elegance show on June 1st 2013 & winning 1st place for the most outstanding closed car 1961-65. I have a couple of other classic cars. including another checker (resto-mod) & have they have never received the attention that this car receives at local shows & even just driving around. I have enjoyed owning this car immensely but have run out of room while restoring my 1966 Bonneville convertible.

The car is in excellent running condition w/ a recent carburator rebuild. It has new shocks & is a real attention getter around town. I have put less than a thousand miles on the car. There are still a few items that need attention that I will list below. I will try & give you the most information possible & welcome any questions you have but would recommend that you arrange to see this car in person if possible. I also own a 1971 checker Resto-mod w/ 502ci 630 hp. 00r4 tranny. totally customized to the max & this stock 64 still gets the most attention at shows.

The car has a rare 226 CU. 141hp Continental engine only available for 2 years with very few sold. The tranny is a Borg Warner 3 speed automatic. amous for being one of the most reliable trannys available. It also has power steering. inted windows & a professionally installed dual tail pipe conversion. my little idiosyncrasy.

The issues you might want to fix are: front grill has peeling chrome on the botton louvre. the ac never had freon added when restored. small scrape mark on the right side of the rear bumper. the wipers work erratically & the AM radio has only extremely low volume. Also the car should be in neutral to start . When starting the car in park the switch sometimes doesn't make contact ( should be an easy fix).

I'm reserving the right to end this auction as it's for sale locally. Good luck with your bids & feel free to ask any questions. If you are within driving distance I would be glad to show you the car. I 'm located about 40 miles north of NYC. I have no knowledge of shipping & you would have to arrange that at your end. I will be glad to accommodate you with any help from this end.

The following is quoted from Steve Haas On the Ebay Motors Blog:

"The Checker Marathon is best known as the go-to taxicab for New Yorkers for anyone who lived there from the 1960s through the 1980s when many were still seeing daily duty. The Marathon was made from 1961 through 1982 with few changes other than power train and trim updates (most notably to meet 5 mph bumper requirements). The Kalamazoo. Michigan. manufacturer did offer them for sale to consumers and here we have a rare preserved early example of such a car. As a 1964 example. the vehicle sports trim chrome bumpers and the original robust Continental inline six-cylinder engine. Later Marathons switched to Chevrolet six and eight cylinder engines.
The seller says the car has been owned by three people; the original owner having owned the car from new until his death in 2001. the second restored and repainted the car and kept it until 2010 and the current owner who recently won an award at the prestigious Greenwich Concours d'Elegance… surely a first for a Checker Marathon.
The Marathon is an interesting alternative for a collector. It's a practical 4-door family car with extra jump seats turning it into a potential 8-seater. The styling appears to be from an even earlier era and having been primarily built as a commercial vehicle. these are renowned for their durability. Checker Marathons were not rare cars in their day. but since most were pretty well used-up in taxi duty finding one in this low-mileage and well preserved condition today is certainly not easy.
As for values. The Hagerty Price Guide shows an average value of $9. 76 with top examples at about $19. 00. Seeing that this car recently won a first place award at an actual concours. one could certainly describe it as being in top shape.
Bid on this rare find before the auction closes on Oct 06. 2013 17:39:23"    (ending date extended)
