"To craft the finest automobiles in America"

This was the brief of Ford's short-lived Continental Division.

A little history might be appropriate before describing the car in this ad.   In 1939. young Edsel Ford. son of Henry Ford. decided that he wanted a ‘European style' car.   Edsel enlisted Ford's head designer E. T. "Bob" Gregorie to put his design ideas to paper.   This vision resulted in a custom car that eventually became the first in a series of limited production Lincoln Continentals from 1940 to 1948.

By the booming middle 1950s. Ford got word that Cadillac was coming out with an elite. prestigious high-end car and decided to revive the Lincoln Continental as the Mark II.   The Mark II lived up to its heritage and became an American classic.   Today it is considered one of the finest designed cars of the second half of the twentieth century.

Every car has its color but we at MissChiTown believe that the Mark II shows best in black that sets off the chrome trim beautifully.   The Continental Mark II had only one option which was air conditioning for $595.   For the people that live in Oklahoma and Texas. most of these collectors will not consider any car that does not have air conditioning.   So that the best Lincoln Mark II is a black Lincoln Mark II with air conditioning.

The car that you see before you fills the bill for the black color and the air conditioning (that owner says the air blows cold) and it is in wonderful street touring and driving condition.   It would not be considered a 100 point show car but is very straight and check out the photos. it in great condition.   Note: the seller says that this car is often the winner at the local shows.

The seller's father purchased this car in the 1990s before the current owner (the son) got the car about six years later.   The seller says that he believes that the car may be all original paint and interior and was told that this car's history was that it was originally owned by a Ford executive and then spent most of its life with the gentleman who sold it to current owner's father.   Seller does not drive it far. only for short jaunts around town and car cruises and states that it runs great.     The car has power steering. power brakes. power windows and power seats and air conditioning that blows cold.   The car has a 460 cubic inch engine and of course an automatic transmission.   Seller says the paint and interior are in very good condition and that the chrome is good and the tires are new.

It is a well-known fact that the 1956 Lincoln Continental was among the world's most expensive cars at the time with a cost of about $10. 00. 00. the equivalent of a new Rolls-Royce or two Cadillacs. when an average Ford was about $2. 00. 00.   It rivaled Rolls Royce and Ford claimed that they lost major money on every one sold.   You must keep in mind that companies like Ford and General Motors are willing to take a financial loss on a lead car because they are “image builders” and also a test bed for new ideas and concepts.

Only the wealthiest people would have had a Lincoln Continental in their garage in 1956.   Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra. Elvis Presley and the Shah of Iran. not to mention Nelson Rockefeller and Henry Kissinger all had Lincoln Continentals.   The total production for all Lincoln Continentals Mark IIs including both 1956 & 1957 models is under 3. 00.   Further it is interesting to note that the spare tire is carried under the trunk lid where the impression of the rear tire exists.   Lincoln Continental Mark IIs are extremely popular in the United States and such countries as Australia. New Zealand and Sweden.   They are fantastic tour cars and make a major impression whenever they are shown.

The car in this ad is not a trailer queen but in beautiful touring condition and the reserve is very low.   This is a car that can be easily won by most bidders.
