Headquartered in Massillon. Ohio. the Forest City Motor Car Company formed in 1905 and lasted until 1909. making about 1. 00 models. In 1907. the Model D was sold for US$600. It was equipped with exterior a single-cylinder. two-cycle engine with eight horsepower. The transmission had two speeds. forward and reverse. The car also came with lamps and a storm front and tools.
In 1905. five Cleveland. Ohio businessmen joined together to form the Forest City Motor Company. playing on their city's longtime nickname: The Forest City. They built a prototype car and began seeking investors. The best source of finance. however. came from Massillon. Ohio. about 50 miles to the south. so the Forest City Motor Company left the Forest City and. in 1906. began manufacturing a car called the Jewell. A single-cylinder high-wheeler with rope drive. it had a runabout body that could be tilted upward to access the engine.
Sales were somewhat lackluster. so the car was updated in design and along the way renamed as “Jewel. ” By 1908. a four-cylinder Rutenber-engined car. of fairly conventional front engine-rear drive design. was introduced. This improved model was built through 1909. by which time new investors Herbert Croxton and Forrest Keeton had changed the company name to Croxton-Keeton Motor Company. Under its auspices. they built Croxton-Keetons and later Croxtons until 1914.
