Who would have guessed that when Porsche unveiled the 911 at the Frankfurt Motor Show fifty years ago it would still be around. And who would have guessed the 911 would be one of the most successful competition cars ever. Hindsight is usually very clear. But having the vision to build a car and continually develop it for nearly a half a century is extraordinary.
But if you fast forward 10 years from that 1963 debut to 1973 and the Carrera RS it is easy to see why this model is still around and easier to see why it had such success in motorsports. Built in limited numbers to be homologated so it could run in FIA Group 4 class. the RS simply stood for Rennsport in German or Race Sport in English. The Carrera name was borrowed from the 356 Carrera which had success in the Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico a decade earlier.
What Steel Affairs if offering is a tribute to the 1973 Carrera RS. It started life as a 1971 911 and has a fresh lime green paint job and looks awesome. The chrome trim has been painted flat black and the Fuchs wheels have been powder coated the same. The seat upholstery is new as is the carpet. The rear seats have been removed and carpet takes their place. This looks very clean and let's face it. the rear seats were unusable anyway. New rubber seals have been installed and the tires are new. The dash looks like new and an aftermarket Pioneer AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo has been added.
Body modifications include wider SC quarters to accommodate the 9” turbo Fuchs wheels. The front fenders have a slight flare to fit 7” wheels. Euro headlights were added in addition to the all impressive “Duck Tail” engine lid. An external oil cooler is mounted out front.
The engine is a stock 3. 0L from a late 70's car and the transmission is a 915 5-speed. Suspension is stock but the rear has been modified to accommodate coil overs down the road. Brakes are stock Porsche but are upgraded to larger rotors in front. There is a front strut bar connecting the towers.
This is a very nice car. It looks great. runs great and sounds great. All it needs is a new owner. Steel Affairs is a licensed Colorado used car dealer specializing in classic. collectible and special interest vehicles of all types. (303) 424-0208. Dealer Stock # 1502.
