A personal car of distinction. the 1955 Ford Thunderbird! 1955 Consumerism takes off in a big way with the sale of some 7. 5 million cars in the U. S with 7 out of 10 families now owning a motor car and new laws were put in place requiring seat belts to be installed on all new cars. The average wages was raised to $1. 00 per hour. The first McDonalds was erected in 1955 and more fast foods and TV dinners appeared. including "fish fingers". The first can of Coca Cola are sold; up until that time it had only been sold in bottles. Rock and roll continues to expand with more idols including Elvis Presley. Bill Haley and the Comets. Chuck Berry and the Platters.

Ford unveiled the Thunderbird at the Detroit Auto Show on February 20th 1954. The first production car came off the line on Sept. 9th 1954. and went on sale Oct. 22nd as a 1955 model and sol briskly. 3. 00 orders were placed in the first 10 days of sale! While only 10. 00 were planned for production. 16. 55 were sold in 1955.

As Standard; the 1955 Thunderbird included a removable top. a fabric convertible top was an option. although commonly specified. The engine was a 292 CID Y-Block V8 which had 18MPG. The car had fender skirts. the exhaust pipes exited through twin bumper guaros. which are bolted to the rear bumper.  

Created to act as a retort to the Chevrolet Corvette. it was also the first massed produced edition of all the Ford Thunderbird models. It was produced with a Fordomatic Automatic or manual overdrive transmissions. and featured four-way powered seats and push button interior door handles. Other unique features were a telescoping steering wheel and tachometer.

Equipped with a V8 engine. the Thunderbird could hit 110-120 MPH. It was a smaller two-seat "personal luxury car" compared to many other much larger cars that were on the road in the 1950's.
