The A40 Somerset was produced from 1952 until 1954. It replaced
the A40 Devon and was quite similar to that body-on-frame car. br/>including using the same 1. 2 litre. four-cylinder pushrod engine.
The engine was updated to produce 42hp however. giving the car a
top speed of 69mph. The Somerset featured an updated
'Transatlantic' body style designed for export and resembled the
larger A70 Hereford. It had a bench front seat and column mounted
gear change. The Somerset was initially offered only as a four-door
saloon. with a three-passenger two-door convertible introduced in
late 1952. The convertible differed from the saloon in having
separate front seats that folded forward to give access to the rear
and had a top speed of 74 mph while the normal saloon could reach
up to 70mph. Over 173. 00 were sold before the Somerset was
replaced by the A40 Cambridge in 1954.

This beautiful Austin A40 has only covered 39. 00 miles from new
and has undergone a complete restoration. Apart from having
new sill panels. the rest of the car is all original and is in
excellent condition throughout. The car was totally stripped out
and mechanical parts stripped and cleaned and replaced where
necessary; the engine and gearbox also received the same attention
when it was part of a private collection of Austin cars. It is
fitted with a column change gearbox. a full stainless steel
exhaust. sunroof and new heater. This beautiful example is supplied
with a comprehensive history file containing the green slip from
the V5 which is required to obtain a new V5C registration document. br/>a Heritage certificate. copies of the old V5's. old MoT test
certificates dating back to 1960s. invoices and newspaper articles
on the car which confirms the mileage of 39. 00.
