Hammonds was initially founded by Joseph Pullen & sold his brewery to James Hammond in 1860. by the time James died in 1875 he owned 35 public houses! In 1919 Sir Alfred married Sylvia Thorne (widow of Lt Col Foster Newton Thorne who had died in Shatt al Adhaim. Mesopotamia in 1917 leaving Sylvia with an 11 month daughter Vivian). Sir Alfred purchased B119BG the same year that he became Chairman of Ffirth & Sons. Director of Hammonds Brewery & the Baronetcy – a busy year by all accounts.
