1922 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost

Chassis number 58YG
Registration number: BF4733

Copy build sheets on file show that this Derby-built Silver Ghost F-Type. chassis number '58YG'. was delivered to the order of Regent of Japan (later Emperor) Hirohito. (A photograph on file shows the Prince Regent in the rear seat). First son of Crown Prince Yoshihito (the future Emperor Taisho). Hirohito had been formally proclaimed Crown Prince and heir apparent in November 1916. In 1921 he became the first Crown Prince of Japan to travel abroad. visiting Belgium. the Netherlands. France. Italy and the United Kingdom in the course of a six-month tour of Europe. It is almost certain that the order for the Silver Ghost resulted from his visit to the UK. On his return to Japan. Hirohito became Prince Regent. ruling in place of his father who had become mentally ill. He acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne on 25th December 1926 following his father's death.

The car is now fitted with rather flamboyant Maharajah style coachwork with styling cues taken from the ex Maharajah of Mysore's Chassis number 1683. This would of course make a super Peking to Paris entrant with little needing to be done for it to enter & complete the run. The current coachwork was purchased at Sotheby's Hendon sale in 1987 & fitted to this chassis in 2002.

The car has a Boa Constrictor style bulb horn fitted along the front running board. To the exhaust tip is a dogs head casting in place of the more usual fish tail. Buttoned red leather covers the seating surfaces. The Victoria hood is also of black leather. The car sits on four newish Blockley tyres with a 5th spare mounted to the running board. The dash board sports a full quotient of instruments including a traditional Klaxon button to activate the said unit under the bonnet. To the rear is a large motoring trunk.

The car is in super running condition with a powerful & quiet engine. Extensive works have been recently undertaken by marque specialist Alan Glew. the bills for which are on file. The engine is well detailed & presents very well. It starts readily "off the switch" when warm indicating good compression. Four wheel brakes have been fitted making for powerful stopping abilities. The running boards have a battery box to one side & tool box to the other. This is a fully sorted entry level ghost ready for immediate enjoyment. It is light on the steering. easy on the gear change & attracts attention wherever it appears.
