1965 Mustang GT "K" Code Convertible

What I have up for auction is possibly one of the best GT "K" code convertible Mustangs in the country. Just finished a one year rotisserie restoration this spring. This car has been restored using Mustang Club of America's judging guidelines.   We tried to do everything to the best of our ability . And from the response we have received  we accomplished that goal. This car is restored to the way it came from the factory other than the Cobra Tri-power setup . The Cobra package could have been ordered from the factory. but not installed on the car prior to delivery. It also could have been ordered from the dealer over the parts counter.  I have a copy of the dealer pamphlet showing all the Cobra packages available at that time. This "K" code came with the standard 4V carburetor from the factory. The previous owner discarded the original carb in the 70's not realizing of the rarity of keeping the original carb. Later he came across this Cobra unit here locally after the owner had sold the car. He kept the unit always planning on installing the setup on the car.  The previous owner owned this car for 35 years. He purchased this car in 1975 and sold it in 2010 when I purchased it. He had parked this car in about 1978 or 1979 after he had purchased  a Fastback "K" car. He had plans to restore the Mustang and started to do some work but it got sidelined and stored away again never to be touched again.   In 2010 when I purchased the car we started into the rotisserie restoration. Then after about 4 to 6 months I got sidelined and put it in my basement for 3 years. June of 2013 it came out of the basement and work began. Here it is today ready for serious collector that likes the best for his collection.

This 65 Mustang has the original number matching engine and drivetrain. The original dual point distributor. exhaust manifolds. heads. The engine was sent off to the machine shop and bored 20 over to clean up the cylinders. Everything inside the engine when I disassembled matched. It was all still original Ford inside. It has a new solid lift cam and lifters matched to original specs. The heads were done to run on todays fuel. It still has 10:5:1 compression pistons. they are new and have the reliefs in them. It sounds super and starts with a flip of the switch. The trans was rebuilt along with the  original steering box. The disc brake calipers were restored along with the proportioning valve.   Everything on this car is new. NOS or restored. I used a lot NOS parts in doing the restoration. Some the previous owner had gathered while under his ownership.

There were over 2000 man hours in restoration on this car. I used urethane primer through the whole restoration. This car came from the factory with acrylic enamel paint and that is what I put back on it.  Acrylic enamel was  used in the late production models. This car was built July 1st of 1965. The GT option was a later in the 65 model year production. With that being said I have read that there were only 270 GT"K" code convertibles made in 1965. There were only 7. 73 HiPo Mustangs manufactured: excluding Shelbys. All Shelbys were built from "K" model Mustangs. so there should be enthusiasm for the "K" car just as well. As my buddy the previous owner says "THE GT K CODE CONVERTIBLE HAS ALL THE BLING!"

The restoration of this car did involve new floors. because the previous owner had cut a couple sections back before you buy complete floors. The car has had a crease from front right fender to the right quarter panel. So I have put NOS fender and quarter on the car. I had a friend search and find me a good door to replace the damaged one.   While I was involved I also put a NOS drivers fender on it also. because the drivers fender has some damage on the lower front area. The drivers door was replaced also because of some prior rust .  The floors. braces. trunk. door jambs were all blasted. The front aprons are original with the vin# number stamped in the three area's Ford  stamped them in.   When I blasted the front radiator area there was grease pencil markings that I could see from the factory. { GT. HP. K. X. D 11 6 } I put those back on the support when I painted the front area. The floors are detailed as you can see in the photos along with everything else with various markings. The paint is smooth and glossy. body is straight. All the bright work such as the door posts and window pot metal frames were sent off to be restored. I didn't buy aftermarket for these pieces I wanted original Ford. The convertible pot metal snap moldings were rechromed.   I had new etched Car-lite glass done for the car. All new wiring front to rear. All new weatherstriping and grommets. burtex trunk mat. It has 5 dual reline tires on new Steel Styled wheels. Jack and ratchet lug wrench. Radio and Reverberation unit restored. Rally Pac restored. New stainless fuel and brake lines. long with new stainless Arvinode exhaust. The convertible top assembly disassembled blasted and painted and reassembled. New top pump. cylinders and hoses. New convertible top installed by J&J Upholstery in Columbus Ohio. Seat frames blasted and painted. new foam. All new deluxe Pony interior in Bright Red. The Wimbledon White and the Deluxe Red interior really makes this convertible stand out .  Other NOS parts: Grille and Corral. Parklamp Assy. Tailamp Assy. Fender GT Emblems. GT Stripes. Bucket Seat side trim. Fenders. Quarter. Front Valance and Stone Deflector. Rear Valance. Idler Arm. Drag link. Tie Rods. Front Shocks. Lug nuts. Spark Plugs. There is more probably that I can't think of.

This is a very very nice car. you will have to see it in person to really appreciate the restoration. My pictures don't do the paint justice. it is really nice. If you have any questions call me anytime at 606-932-9582.
