THIS PARTICULAR 1959 AUSTIN-HEALEY BUGEYE SPRITE
DETAILS. ETAILS. DETAILS
Like many of our customers and other auto enthusiasts. we have looked at hundreds of vehicle offerings on eBay and other Internet sources. In fact. we recently reviewed some Bugeyes that were sent to us by clients considering the vehicles as "competition" to the 1959 Bugeye listed in this auction. This review of so-called "restored" cars truly drives home the importance of the old saying "The Devil is in the Details. "
In many instances these "fully restored cars" appeared to be cars that have received attention to surface items for a quick sale. but certainly not comprehensive "nut & bolt" restorations. Many of the cars listed for sale (or sold) lack detailed photographs suggesting that the time and energy necessary to complete a high end restoration was not expended. Specifically. there were no photos of the cars in their disassembled state or before condition. Other cars did not show the undercarriage or detailed suspension photographs. When they did. there were signs that components were painted on the car and that old hardware was used during the 'restoration" process.

While the telltale signs of a quick "flip" sale can be obvious. many of the mechanical and cosmetic items can be masked to give the appearance of a complete restoration when. in fact. the car received only minimal attention to items that make it look appealing. With Bugeye's now being over 50 years old. attention to mechanical components becomes an essential safety consideration.

We are often asked what to consider when it comes to a complete vs. partial restoration. While the list of items and details is considerable. a few of the items / categories that we recommend include:

- Did the car begin life as a straight. solid. damage free example (and ideally a rust free West coast car)?
- Was the engine and other major components (transmission. rear end. suspension. fuel system. etc. ) removed from the car to ensure a complete and thorough restoration?
- Was the entire interior removed from the car including the dash. wiring harness. gauges. trim and carpet to check for any rust and damage?
- Was the entire braking system disassembled and refurbished including new custom hard brake lines. pads. brake hoses. master cylinder. wheel cylinders and checking / cleaning of all components?
- When the car was re-painted. was it re-painted in the original factory color according to the build sheet or British Heritage Certificate?
- When painted did the car receive a complete and total re-paint including removal of the doors. bonnet. all trim. bumpers and interior so that it could be painted as a "bare shell"
- Does a close inspection of the engine bay suggest painted brake and master cylinder lines. touch up to the manifold (as opposed to being bead blasted and properly treated). a different color or old/incorrect wiring in the engine compartment?
- Are there detailed photos of the cars underside including the front & rear. rocker panels. fuel tank and suspension?
- What about "Before & After" photographs showing the cars transformation?

All of these considerations become essential when evaluating the value of a particular car and assessing its true value.

OVERVIEW / HISTORY - THIS 1959 BUGEYE

We purchased this Bugeye in July. 2011 for the cars second owner of over 20 years. The Bugeye has spent virtually all of its life leading the easy California life and the British Heritage Certificate supports the fact that the car was originally exported from the UK to the USA as a left hand drive car.
Upon our acquisition of the Austin Healey Sprite. the car had spent 10 years in dry storage but the owner had recently completed the necessary repairs to make it a running / driving car at the time of our purchase. Initially. we used the car as a local "occasional use car" until we decided to have it restored about 1 year ago. During our time with the car. it proved to be a reliable car that had signs of being well maintained.
The Bugeye is currently on California "Non-Op" so no back fees are due and it carries a clean California title.

Within the previous month. a restoration has been finalized on this smart looking 1959 Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite. It is now ready for a new owner to fully enjoy. Anywhere it goes; it will bring out smiles. particularly to the driver. While not restored to its 100% original configuration (never the intent). Bugeye aficionados will spot the tasteful and subtle modifications inside. outside and under the hood. While the restoration specifics are too lengthy to list in detail. some of the major features include:

- Fitted with later model 1275 cc "Spridget" rebuilt engine & dual SU carburetors
- 4 speed synchromesh rib case transmission
- Factory correct Old English White paint (as supported by the British Heritage Certificate)
- Freshly restored black interior
- Brand new professionally installed black convertible top and custom fitted tonneau cover
- New windshield & rubber trim
- Polished windshield vertical posts
- Polished "cockpit" trim
- New front suspension (all components completely removed from the car and bead blasted. new bushings installed (refer to photos showing front end of the car totally disassembled)
- Entirely new brake system including: brake shoes. custom made new brake lines. wheel cylinders. drums bead blasted and painted. etc.
- New Grade 5 hardware throughout for major fittings
- Proper factory wheels and hubcaps with newer high quality Michelin tires
- Highly detailed engine bay including factory correct green engine and transmission paint & most ancillary components in proper colors

- Comes with a factory spare & mounted tire & jack (not shown in the photographs)

HISTORY OF THE AUSTIN HEALEY SPRITE BUGEYE / FROGEYE

The Austin-Healey Sprite was produced from 1958 through 1971 with over 130. 00 examples of the two-door. low-cost. open roadster being manufactured. The car was designed by the Healey Motor Company. more specifically Donald Healey. and produced in partnership with the British Motor Corporation (BMC).

There were three series of the Sprite. The first series (Mark 1) was produced from 1958 through 1961. with approximately 49. 00 examples being sent to the USA. In the United States. the cars were called "Bugeyes". while in the UK they were commonly known as "Frogeyes".

Each of the names evolved from the headlights mounted on the top of hood that resemble a frog and/or bug. Concealed flip-up headlamps were in the original drawings. but high production costs canceled those plans. The body was very smooth and flowing. There were no door handles; to open the door. the inside handle would need to be operated. This meant that the doors could not be locked. The trunk did not open but was accessed through an opening behind the seats. Housed inside the trunk was the spare tire along with the jack and tools. Up front. the entire front hood hinged upwards. allowing easy and convenient access to the engine.

The mechanical components were borrowed. in an effort to reduce the cost of production. from a number of vehicles that were already available in the marketplace. The suspension was from the Austin A-35 while the basic engine was courtesy of the Morris Minor. The 948 cc engine was based on the Morris Motor Company A-series but fitted with dual SU carburetors increasing the horsepower from 37 to 43. Coil springs and wishbones were in the front while the rear was a semi-elliptical leaf spring configuration. A rack-and-pinion steering unit controlled the car. drum brakes provided the stopping power. and a four-speed manual gearbox sent power to the rear wheels.

Bugeyes had a plethora of new technology for the era. mainly found in their innovative D-Type Jaguar inspired chassis. As the Bugeye Sprites took to the streets. the race track also became a familiar home. The British Motor Company (BMC) competition department took considerable interest in putting the cars to use. The "Win on Sunday. Sell on Monday" attitude seemed apparent as they demonstrated their dominance with special Sebring models. still iconic today. John Sprinzel and Will Cave were very responsible for the success of these cars on the track and even won their class in the 1958 Alpine Rally among other significant events. often against larger more powerful race cars.

Later versions of the Sprite. while similar mechanically. no longer had the one piece front hood. and most people felt they lost some of the charm of the original Bugeye / Frogeye. The 948 cc engine continued to power the car until 1964.

The original Sprite was a popular vehicle for many reasons. including its small size. sporty nature. and overall low cost of operation. The original versions cost approximately $2000. The cars were easy to maintain. offered great handling and epitomized the British Sports car experience of the 1950's / 1960's. While the cars were certainly not considered high performance. they were geared to have "zippy" performance in the lower ranges and. equipped with the larger. later model engines; the Bugeye was capable of speeds approaching 100 mph.

Today. Bugeye / Frogeyes have become increasingly difficult to locate for a variety of reasons. While large numbers of cars were produced. the cars were prone to significant rust (especially in "rust zones" in the USA). and many cars didn't survive past the 1970's. Also. a large number of cars were entered in a variety of motorsports events including road racing. auto crossing and other events where the cars did extremely well and established a number of records.

RESTORATION DETAILS

This Bugeye has just been the subject of an extensive professional restoration. Many photographs of this process are included at the bottom of this write-up. The body and paint were completed by professional who removed virtually every component from the car to ensure a high quality finished product. During the restoration process. the paint was totally stripped (many components to bare metal) and the car was found to be a very solid California car with extremely minimal rust.

The floor pans are original. straight and were virtually rust-free as is the rear section behind the seats. There is no indication that the rocker panels or other body components have been changed over the years. The body has been re-sprayed in factory-correct Old English White and is complimented by a lovely black interior with tasteful red piping on the seats. A custom top and tonneau cover have been fitted (refer to photographs). Also included are original side windows that have received new plexi-glass to replace the faded and cracked original material.
A unique and useful feature of this Bugeye includes a professional modification to the rear deck-lid. The improvement allows for access to the typically difficult to reach area behind the front seats. The quality upgrade consisted of alterations to the rear deck-lid area resulting in a panel measuring approximately 10" to not only allow access to the rear area of the car but also accept an additional "jump seat" for use by small passengers when the hinged panel is in the "up" position. The work was completed to a very high standard and is nicely finished. The panel gaps are excellent and the chrome hinges are similar to those found on many British cars of the era and the underside is nicely finished in custom made vinyl as is the rear seat.

The cockpit edge trim and windshield posts have all been polished to a chrome-like brilliance. A new windshield has been installed. New rubber gaskets were used when re-installing the taillights and headlights and new headlight bezels were installed. A new black convertible top has been installed and a new black tonneau cover procured.

The entire front and rear suspension was removed and rebuilt as required using all new bushings and fasteners. Similarly. the rack-and-pinion steering was removed and rebuilt using all new rubber parts. The entire brake system has been restored using new lines. a new master cylinder. new wheel cylinders. new shoes and all drums were inspected. measured and turned.

The 1275 cc "Spridget" engine. which had been recently rebuilt. was freshened with many new gaskets and seals including the rear main seal. front crank seal. valve cover gasket. oil pan gasket. water pump gasket and manifold gasket. The engine was cleaned and painted the proper green color. A new thermostat and spark plugs were installed and new motor mounts were used. The rib case 4-speed synchromesh transmission was tested. thoroughly cleaned and painted the proper factory green. Proper shiny new period style chrome air filters have added to the dual SU carburetors. A factory style cloth-braided wiring harness has been installed in the 12 volt electrical system. now a negative ground. All dash gauges were removed cleaned and inspected. A new battery was installed. A NOS (New Old Stock) Lucas horn was installed in the factory proper location. Anti freeze. oil. transmission and rear end fluids were drained and replaced with high quality products.
The interior has been redone in proper black (as the Bugeye left the factory). which nicely complements the white exterior. and a custom "jump" seat has been added. Both front seats and "jump" seat are now trimmed in red stitching which provides a lovely. but not garish accent to the interior. A new weather strip kit has been installed on the doors. hood and windshield. New knobs. as needed. were installed on the dash and all gauges freshened. Note: Just before we listed the Sprite. the speedometer failed and will be repaired prior to delivery. The mileage showing when the car is delivered may vary for the miles shown in the listing and in the photographs.

Anyone who has done a restoration knows it is expensive! The above summary does not begin to describe all of the details (and expense!) involved in this restoration. The reserve price is well below what it would cost to achieve this level of restoration on your own not including the acquisition cost of a quality. rust free Bugeye as a restoration car.

As a result of the fresh restoration. the Sprite is in excellent cosmetic condition both inside and out. The extensive photographs reflect the car's condition including the body. paint. engine compartment. interior. rear compartment and underside.

MECHANICAL CONDITION - RUNNING / DRIVING

The Sprite starts immediately with the use of the functional choke and warms up quickly. It idles smoothly and does not overheat. It runs and drives very well and offers significantly improved performance compared to the smaller stock engine. The engine is very strong and does not exhibit any issues. There is no smoke. leaking. or unusual noise and this is also true of the transmission and drive-line components. The Sprite has excellent power as a result of the upgraded engine; shifts well through all of the gears and does not hesitate or exhibit drivability problems.

The transmission shifts smoothly and the clutch engages and does not chatter or make noise. The car does not pop out of gear and shifts are short and precise. The restored braking system result in straight. sure stops. The emergency brake is fully functional and holds the car on a relatively steep incline. The steering is tight and precise and the car offers handling that will leave the driver with a smile for miles to come.
