HISTORY

In 1969. few cars could claim to be as wicked as a Cobra Jet Mustang from Ford Motor Company.   It is only fitting. then. that on Halloween of 1968 FoMoCo received an order for what could only be termed as one of the meanest spec'd out Cobra Jets to roll out of the San Jose production facility. On October 31st. 1968. an order was received for a Raven Black over Black interior Mustang Mach 1 with red accents. The car was ordered with the venerable “R-Code” 428 Cobra Jet and a 4 speed close ratio transmission. After all. this wasn't a car for sissies and rowing through the gears manually was all that would do.   The car came equipped with an N case 3. 50 rear axle and was an easy driving car with factory Power Front Disc Brakes and factory Power Steering. To top it off. this car was ordered to be as clean in appearance as possible. No sport slats or spoiler for this bad boy. just pure. clean lines.   The car seen in this ad is that very car. 9R02R122654. The car's VIN's are present on both the driver and passenger side aprons as well as the original warranty tag on the drivers door and the dash tag.

This rare “Double R” car was ordered by the Salt Lake City Ordering District. built at San Jose on December 26. 1968 (because it would just seem wrong to build something this sinister on Christmas. wouldn't it?) and purchased from Marion Willey & Son Inc. Ford on January 6. 2014 by a returning soldier from Vietnam. He is still alive and I am working on getting his contact information currently.

The first owner used the car as his every day car for some time and casually raced the car on the street and strip. though he never did any extensive modifications to the car.   The car came to the previous owner in the 1998 and he performed a high quality restoration on a approximately 50. 00 original mile car. The car now shows 58. 00 miles and some change. which is the original mileage.

Prior to restoration. the car was an almost entirely rust free car which can only be attributed to the low mileage seeing as the car was in Utah its entire life.   The restoration was undertaken by one of the nation's most renowned body and paint guys. He is well known. especially in the Cobra Jet Mustang world. for his skill in bodywork but. mostly. for his ability to lay down incredible paint work.

 BODY

During the restoration. the passenger side quarter was replaced utilizing an NOS Ford quarter panel. back when parts like that were more readily available. The panel replacement was done so well that. had I not talked to the restorer about the car. I would have never been able to tell on my own. It was done professionally and is not detectable to my eye. however. I am looking to describe the car as accurately as possible so it is still worth noting. Otherwise. the car is an entirely original sheet metal car. Not just original Ford metal. but original to this car and the car is absolutely as straight as can be.

UNDERSIDE

100% of the floors are original and neither the floors nor the torque boxes have ever seen rust or been cut. Being a 58. 00 original mile car. the car was wonderfully preserved up until the car was restored. Being a Utah car. the car was undercoated at the selling dealership (as per interviews with the original owner) and that undercoating was merely freshened during the restoration of the car. Undercoating was a common dealer option in states where rust prevention was of paramount importance. As you can see in the pictures. the front and back of the unibody still show the correct red oxide finish from the San Jose factory and the underside is very well detailed from the underside of the motor to the differential.  The lack of major surface rust on components attests to how well the car has been taken care of since its restoration.

 PAINT

Simply put. this car has a lot of great attributes. but the paint has to be near the very top of the list. This paint job was done around 15 years ago. If I hadn't told you that. you would never have guessed that this car was painted that long ago. After the car was painted. it was taken to the occasional show but the owner slowly lost interest in the old cars. The car was covered and driven less than 500 miles a year. The paint on this car was been buffed one time in 15 years and currently shows extremely well. There are no major flaws. I do not wish to run a buffer over it because. frankly. the paint does not need it. However. if the next owner chooses to buff the car. I am fairly certain they would have a car that looks like it was painted yesterday. This car's restorer is known for the quality of his paint work and this car shows why.

 INTERIOR

Not far behind the paint on the list of this car's great features is the interior. The interior in this car is all original with the exception of the headliner and the dash pad. During the car's restoration. an NOS Ford headliner. NOS Ford dash pad. and replacement carpet were put on the car. Otherwise the interior on this car is all original to this car.   The interior shows as new with only the very slightest of flaws which have not been corrected in the interest of preserving the car. Overall. you have an original interior which presents as close to “as-new” as you can get.

 AWARDS

Upon the completion of the restoration. the car was awarded at Silver award at a National MCA show held in Park City. Utah. However. awards did not give the last owner a lot of satisfaction so. over the years. they were either lost of thrown out.   Looking at the pictures. you can see why this car received such an accolade.

 DRIVETRAIN

The car is powered by a date coded. real Cobra Jet block. There is no 390 hiding under this hood. it is the real McCoy. Power is transferred through the desirable long tail toploader which has a Hurst shift kit installed. The lever and knob were custom fabricated to the Hurst setup to ensure a stock appearing interior. The car shifts like an absolute sweetheart. The best of both worlds. original appearance with superior shift action.   The car has its correct and desirable N Case rear end with the appropriate tag.   The motor on this car is topped with some very rare parts. not the least of which is a full smog setup and the original shaker setup. Under that shaker is a C9AF-9510-U Holley 735cfm carb. This is the service replacement carb. however. it is a tough one to find and is the correct service replacement for this car. Under the hood you have a very well presented. and correct. car which will win show after show.

SO. DOES SHE DRIVE?

You bet she does. As you can probably insinuate from the rest of the description. this is a very correct car which was been built to a high standard. The car drives as nice as it looks. The car goes into every gear smoothly and the steering is nice and tight. The power steering works like a charm and the power discs do the job extremely well. I was pleasantly surprised at just how well this car stops.   The car starts on the key every time. This is not a car that needs fiddling. tuning. or adjustments. It is dialed in and ready to go.   The previous owner drove it from his home in Utah to Steamboat Springs. Colorado with no issues. I am confident this car could make the trip tomorrow without issue and I see nothing to indicate that you couldn't jump in it and go a couple 100 miles right away.

SOME MORE ODDS AND INS.

In summary. what you have here is a highly desirable and documented 1969 "Double R" Mach 1 in the most desirable and attractive of all the color combinations. Top that off with a 4 speed and you have probably the best combination imaginable in the collector world.  This car is built to an extremely high standard in a world which seems filled with pieced together Mach 1s with incorrect parts. shady bodywork. and low integrity unibodies.  Compared to other offerings on the market currently. this car stands out.  It is a great car and I am looking to sell it. My reserve is VERY REASONABLE and. please make no mistake. the car is being listed with the intention of selling it.
