History -
This 1960 Mercury Monterey convertible was special ordered from Sachs & Sons Lincoln Mercury in Downey California by Mr. Karl Kramer on October 29. 1959. The price was $3. 38. 00. he paid cash. It was the last car he ever bought.
Mr. Kramer was the Treasurer of MCA. Music Corporation of America and resided at 904 Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills. The neighborhood was star-studded Lucille Ball. Jimmy Stewart. Agnus Moorhead. and Jack Benny lived just doors away.
According to his daughter Louise. he only drove convertibles. As a young adult he was stricken with Rheumatic fever which left him without pain. but unable to turn his neck. He only dove with the top down. never putting the top up because when driving he could see other cars better that way.
The car was driven just 32. 00 miles before he stopped driving in the late 1960's. It then sat idle in his garage until 1978 when his daughter Louise told her San Marino. neighbor. Mrs. Sjogren about the car. Mrs. Sjogren was complaining that her recently retired husband. John. aka"Stump" was driving her crazy and needed a hobby. Louise suggested that he buy her father's "old convertible" and restore it. The next day Louise drove them to her parent's house in Beverly Hills and showed them the car. They bought it on the spot.
"Stump" had the car repainted. but during the twenty-two years he owned the car drove it only once. to Santa Monica and back. Mrs. Sjrogren said that riding in the Mercury with the top down made her feel like Queen Elizabeth. so she waved to everyone along the way there and back. The Mercury then sat in their garage for another twenty plus years until "Stump". after his wife's passing. decided to move to be closer to his daughter and listed it for sale in the local newspaper.
