Bill Kelly's 1932 Ford 3w Coupe Hot Rod History      This car first gained prominence when it was profiled by author and historian Ken Gross in a Rodder's Journal feature article titled "The Philadelphia Story". It chronicled the cars history beginning in 1947 when it was first "hot rodded" by a then 16 year old William Kelly of Warminster. PA.     From terrorizing the streets of Philadelphia. drag racing at Lancaster Drag-A-Way. . through its numerous engine swaps. body mods and paint jobs. its eventual sale in the 1950's. and subsequent re-birth in the early 90's when it was discovered in a garage row outside of Philadelphia. After being located. the car underwent a sympathetic restoration at the hands of master metalsmith Dave Simard in his Leominster. Massachusetts shop.     Under the guidance of Bill Kelly himself. (who had been tracked down and was still living in the same Warminster. PA home) the rust free body had its channeled floor re-enforced. original frame straightened and roof lowered 2 1/2 inches. There is not an ounce of body filler in the entire car. all work performed was done using old school techniques such as gas welding. brazing and hammer welding. The cowl vent. which had been leaded shut. was made functional again and the torn roof insert replaced. It still retains almost all of its purple lacquer paint which Bill Kelly applied sometime in the early 50's. the old cowl mounted antenna. as well as the "Deuce's Wilde" (sp) moniker which was hand lettered onto the rumble lid sometime in the 1960's when it returned to the drag strip under new ownership. It even has some of the original water slide decals on the passenger glass.     Every original nut and bolt was saved. cleaned and re-used. The old chrome 1937 Ford "banjo" rear and '37 LaSalle transmission were serviced and put back into place. The 1949 Cadillac 331 ci engine was rebuilt and re-installed along with the original Belond headers. multi carb manifold. and Spalding Flamethrower ignition. It is cooled by the original modified 1932 V8 radiator. Steering is handled by the '50 Ford pick-up steering column and box. and the 1956 Ford "Safety" steering wheel. Braking force is supplied by the 1938 Lincoln rear and 1939 Ford front drum assemblies. All originally installed by Bill Kelly.     On the inside. the red and white tuck and roll interior panels were saved intact as well as the Kelly- fabricated metal-flaked custom gauge cluster loaded with rare 2-5/8 Stewart Warner race gages. The car retains its original interior wood supports and chicken wire. tacking strips. garnish moldings and glass. including the roll-down back window.       It has appeared in numerous publications including The Rodder's Journal. Street Rodder. Rod & Kulture and Tom Cotter's hardcover book "The Corvette in the Barn" which chronicles significant Barn Finds and what he calls "Automotive Archeology". It has also been a feature car at The Saratoga Auto Museum including a 3 month stay for the "Barn Finds" exhibit and another long stay for the East Cast Hot Rods exhibit. In short. this car is a true survivor and an icon of early East Coast Hot Rodding. a no-excuses car that has been a hot rod for well over 50 years of its life. The genuine article.     Sadly Bill Kelly passed away in July of 2010. but he lived to see his old hot rod again. work on it. drive it! He left behind a wonderful hot rod with a storied past. All documentation as well as Bill's personal photo album and mementos will be included with the car to keep its provenance intact for generations to come. A chance to own a car like this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. The current owner was fortunate enough to enjoy that opportunity and has been its proud custodian for nearly 20 years. The time has come for someone else to enjoy it. This may be your only chance to own a genuine piece of East Coast hot rod history. (Note: Many accessories. such as the homemade hairpins. headlight stanchions. rumble grab handles. etc. were replaced or removed from the car over the years. nbsp; but all of the parts original to the car when it was first "Hot-Rodded " by Bill Kelly are included with the car and can be easily bolted back on if desired. )     The car is located in Linden NJ 07016. Upon receipt of payment and mutual agreement. the coupe could be delivered to the AACA Fall meet in Hershey. Pa. during the week of 10/8-10/12. 2013. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of Hot Rod History. Please call with any questions.
