1963 Rambler American 440, LOW 31k ACTUAL MILES!, Unrestored Survivor, Arizona.

This beautiful original unrestored 1963 Rambler American 440 is a very unique and special car. It has traveled only 31. 76 miles since being bought new by Mr. and Mrs. Bullock from Jim Twyford Rambler in 1963. They were a retired couple and used the car primarily just to take Mr. Bullock to the hospital for treatment. They always took great pride in the Rambler and it shows. The car was always garaged. carefully maintained. never smoked in. and babied its whole life. We bought the car from a friend who's wife worked at the hospital and became friends with the Bullocks. After Mr. Bullock passed away. his wife stopped driving and parked the car in the garage. Our friend bought the Rambler on June 25. 1991 with only 24. 63 miles on it. Over the next 20 some years. he only put on about 7000 miles of occasional weekend driving and continued the pride of ownership tradition. The mileage on the car is ACTUAL AND DOCUMENTED and not wishful thinking or some owner's assumption as is the case with so many of the older cars advertised.

1963 was the last year for the funky and classic Nash designed Americans. They had a make over in 1964 and lost a lot of their charm and collectability. There were actually about half as many 440 4-door sedans made in 1963 than there were 2-door hardtops or convertibles. With only 2937 made. this Rambler is not only a unique but also a RARE little car. even more so given the fact that it is an unrestored survivor. This American still wears her original two-tone Valencia Ivory and Corsican Gold metallic paint which gives the car a very classy appearance. Inside. the Rambler still has her original gold upholstery. Both the paint and upholstery are in remarkable condition especially given the fact that the car is 50 years old!

As mentioned. this Rambler is the 440 model which is the top of the line for the American series. It is equipped with dealer installed air conditioning that was a pretty rare option for a 1963 American. Another unique option is the "Airline Reclining Seats" with "Nap Couch" which makes into a travel bed (see photo). The 195. 6 cid OHV 6 cylinder engine was optional on the less expensive American models and when coupled with the optional 3-speed "Flash-O-Matic" transmission. makes the car fun and easy to drive. Though it has manual steering and brakes. the effort level is very low and I never missed the power options.

The little Rambler runs and drives as good as it looks. The engine starts at the touch of the key and idles smoothly and the transmission shifts as it should. The car does not smoke and only leaks a couple of drops when parked. All the lights. wipers. horn. original radio. heater/defroster. turn signals and so on all work as they should. The gas gauge always reads empty and I am guessing the sending unit or float is bad. The air conditioning compressor comes on and is quiet and the fan works but it does not blow cold. To my knowledge it has never been charged and therefore is long overdue for the service. The car is wearing only its second set of tires which are bias ply 6. 00-15's (which further attests to the mileage). The tires are still in good shape and fine for show purposes but should be replaced if you plan on driving the car on a more regular basis. The spare is still the original Goodyear 6. 00-15.

As you can see from the photos. the paint and body are in exceptional condition. However. there are some flaws as you would expect on a 50 year old vehicle. The ivory paint is in amazing condition but the gold top is showing some fading and a few stains but still very presentable. The body has some small dings and creases. most of which are paintless dent removable. but I never had the time to have it done. There is some normal surface rust on the undercarriage and it has never been detailed. I refinished the motor paint since a leaking radiator hose had ruined the paint at some point in its life.

The Rambler is a fun car. People smile and wave whenever I go for a drive and it draws a crowd whenever I stop. Ramblers. like Studebakers. are becoming very collectable especially when they are low mileage original examples such as this one. This is a chance to own a rare classic car without investing a lot of money and time restoring one. It should be noted that an unrestored car in this condition is always worth more than a restored one. As they say in the hobby. "it is only original once".
