1966 Citroen DS 21 Pallas Sedan (Saloon) for sale
Current customer rating: (672 votes ) based onI chose this car 15 years ago for its condition and production date in the 20 years of DS production. To me it has both the most attractive DS front end (known as the second nose). the nicest dashboard. and the higher powered and modern short stroke engine. I also didn't want leather to maintain comfort in the summer heat. I bought if from a Colorado Citroen restorer. the interior had been redone several years prior to his work and he concentrated on renewing the body and structure. I then provided the finishing touches such as air conditioning. new dash. windshield. stainless steel exhaust. etc. Much of the car needed surprisingly little work as it came from the dry climate of New Mexico. Most D series cars use aluminum door handles which survive well but don't look so great. on Pallas cars the majority of the trim is stainless which is very durable but often the few chrome plated parts are in terrible shape. however on this one they are all very nice.
The car has received regular repairs and maintenance over its time with me. by Citroen specialists Dave Burnham. Phil Caron. and myself. Recent repairs include replacement of the original 20A generator (included) with a modern alternator. sphere diaphragms. and heater core repair. The engine. clutch. transmission AFAIK have never been out or disassembled but work well. The car uses about 1 quart oil per about 2000 miles which is probably little changed from new.
Good air conditioning is rare in these cars. I installed two modern electric fans inside the confines of the radiator shroud to invisibly boost air flow when needed and it works quite well. Hydraulics for this car originally used LHS/brake fluid. a year after I bought it I switched to commercial canola based hydraulic oil and have used that ever since. It is paint and environment friendly. but could easily be switched back to LHS/brake fluid if so desired for originality.
This is a very nice but not perfect car. The 12th ICCCR (International Citroen Car Club Rally) was held in 2002 in Amherst. Massachusetts USA. In attendance were over 600 Citroens from 19 countries including 176 DS models. At this gathering this car won first place in its Concours d'Elegance class. DS 1956-1967 (single headlight style). Since that time it has been driven about 4000 miles and has changed little. The trophy is included with the car. Also included is a "birth certificate" from the Conservatoire Citroen showing the car's date of manufacture as November 11. 1965.
I'm selling just for the need to do something different in life. I am thinking hard about getting a much less common (in the US anyway) Citroen BX.
If you are unfamiliar with all the varieties of these cars I highly recommend John Reynolds' book "Original Citroen DS". both pictures and production details are excellent.
If you would like to see the car it is located near Hartford CT. about a 20 minute drive from Bradley Airport (BDL). please email me to arrange. The car will also be at the the annual Citroen rally in Saratoga Springs NY on June 14. see the driveshesaid. com site for details.
